Trans OPSEC, USpol

Meanwhile, I don't want to give an endorsement, but as an example, Signal, for all its faults (and there are faults), doesn't share chat logs with law enforcement-- because they cant. They don't have them. For information likely to get you arrested, focus on platforms not regularly accessed by government actors.

Something has gone terribly wrong when Fox News can claim a tax write-off for its $787M defamation settlement, yet school teachers only get a measly $300 deduction for buying their own supplies.

The idea that you need a gun for protection, because you’re going to save yourself from something or you’re going to save someone else from something, because there’s a good guy with a gun saving lives, needs to end if our country and society are to ever make any progress.

Because this is how they get used the vast majority of the time, or by law enforcement wrongly shooting people to death or to devastating injury.

Too many people with too many guns- this is what you get.

I used last week's rainy days for a much needed break and got some rest. Today the sun has been shining all day, so I've been spending all day outside in the garden mowing grass. In between I got a few very nice looking photos with the calves.

I guess, after five months and 350 photos, it's time for an introduction. This is me, Bob, and that thing on my shoulder is my first pet.

I'm an amateur photographer who, according to my mother, has no style.

"YOU HAVE NO STYLE, BOB."

She's right. I used to teach photography and Photoshop, so I know a lot of tricks... and yet somehow I have no discipline when it comes to using them.

So shooting and post-processing is like spinning a roulette wheel. Every photo is guaranteed to be different from the last... and nothing will ever hang together as a collection.

I'm just happy when I can make something post-card-worthy.

Meet Arp 220, an an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) emitting an amount of light equivalent to more than a trillion suns. It is the product of two massive galaxies that are in the process of merging to become one. The six rays or spikes that seem to emerge from its core are artifacts of the telescope's optics, resulting from the fact that the core is extremely bright.

And of course, in the background: galaxies everywhere.

The generative AI mania isn't exactly the same as the blockchain mania that we're just starting to recover from, but they sure do rhyme.

“I remember … seeing that there was some regional bill to outlaw L.G.B.T. propaganda and thinking it was ridiculous and wouldn’t apply to me. And then, two years later, I was on the run from Russia, because they were actually coming after my kids.”

#AI #ML research/publishing operates in silos - to the detriment of making progress.

Our #IJCAI submission on #OpenWorldLearning #OWL was rejected for good and bad reasons.

The bad reason is: "this is not just planning but also something similar to reinforcement learning".

Guess what - that is the point of our research! We are trying to close the gap between designed #AIPlanning systems and adaptive #Learning systems. It is a super-hard gap to push #AI #ML algorithmic research in.

Why is Scientific American talking about Kaktovik numerals just *now*? It's because some linguists working with the Script Encoding Initiative at U.C Berkeley recently got them added to Unicode! See here:

For more on the cool mathematical properties of Kaktovik numerals, try the Wikipedia article on them:

I suspect there's more to be said. Maybe someone has worked out all the details somewhere?

Below is an example of long division.

I’ll be returning to #onlineradio with my lovely show Connections to Sound this week! It’s about a space to explore #experimentalmusic #downtempomusic #ambientmusic #electronicmusic #soundscapes and all things that connect us to the world around us. #phenomenology #philosophyofsound I’ve been on hiatus as the original station, worldwide FM, stopped regular broadcasts. But returning via a new station home #resonanceextra

Mostly I want to go and play and . And then afterward I can (haha, see what I did there? aboutness?) some more.

@donkeyherder About 10yrs ago, I started with #NoDig. From a tiny patch this has grown to cover the whole garden (1300m2) + a plot of ~500m2 of neglected agricultural land: feinschmeckergarten.de/index.p (in 🇩🇪 with pics)
2017 I covered the lawn in the photo with cardboard and #compost. 2nd picture is today. Less work, more pleasure.
Starting point for me were the videos of #CharlesDowding on Youtube.
Go for it! You'll never go back digging.
Just be aware of compost quality, to not import weed seeds.

My system did not for this situation.

Just continuing to document how erasure works!
We've gone from:
@emilymbender cleverly coining term "stochastic parrots" to "maybe Sam Altman" to "maybe
Gary Marcus". No reason to believe it's someone other than Dr Bender, but our biases PUSH PUSH PUSH to credit white men over women.

But if we avoid the mistake of bringing in aboutness, and for that matter external objects, so early on, is the most obvious, and perhaps the most difficult, place to start one's going, since it is (sort of by definition) starting with exactly whatever it is that the individual is Given, and trying to build everything else up from that.

(And perhaps the first fun paradox is that neither words nor other people to communicate with are necessarily Given, so what is one even doing?!)
