Hey y'all, i know you know this, but while you definitely shouldn't use GPTs for legal research, also don't rely on GPTs for RESEARCH, PERIOD.

They are neither giving nor TRYING to give you intersubjectively associated and derived facts; they are not even remixing factual CONCEPTS into new forms.

They are modelling human biases out into digestible bullshit with a statistically-determined high probability of being swallowed.

That is all.

They don't have to be this way, but, at present, the people making them have no incentive to change them. So. Don't lean on them for fact stuff. It's not what they do.

@malteengeler @Mer__edith @signalapp
Cory @pluralistic Doctorow writes a lot about the fact that surveillance is 'tested' on the weakest persons first until it is normalized enough to apply to everybody.
The article shows this cycle started even earlier than I had thought.

hey look, an actually useful orange-site comment, about HP ink cartridge hardware hacking

"Put a resistor, about 1kohm, in the power line to the security chip on the cartridge.

Now, whenever the printer tries to read data from the chip, it works. Whenever it tries to record data to the chip (for example, marking the cartridge as empty), that uses more power, and the memory chip doesn't respond.

Amazingly, the whole setup just works and prints forever, saying the cartridges are always full... "

This seems very important and worth ongoing study:

“Once again, results suggest a rise in diversity as the 10 biggest server contribution to the Fediverse is reduced by more than 10%. So, even if the biggest servers are accumulating more users, it seems that the Fediverse is becoming more decentralized.”

Can we stop using mental illness as a label when talking about police brutality and white supremacy?

No, they aren't psychopaths. They're racists.

They aren't sociopaths. They're racists.

They aren't narcissists. They're racist.

If you label them as being mentally ill, you're:
a) being shitty towards those of us with mental illness

b) giving them an excuse for their bullshit.

Please stop it.

Remember those German academics who developed a fraud detector that actually did nothing but look at whether the authors used institutional email addresses, had international collaborators, and were affiliated with a hospital?

And then they concluded, based on this "detector", that a high fraction of the papers out of Asia and the Global South are fraudulent?

And then they got a glowing writeup in Science?

(If you missed it: fediscience.org/@ct_bergstrom/)

Turns out there's data on all this.
