I've published a new post on my #Patreon about the Sex Worker Union and my membership to it:

Patrons get access to two posts a week, with a mixture of professional, political, and personal writing. My patrons are a plugged-in and engaged bunch, and I love getting into discussions with them about the nuances of kink, porn and politics!
We hear a lot about aliens that crashed in America. By contrast, the 1947 Nayagarh Incident was barely publicised. Our only sources are palm-leaf engravings by artist Sri Pachanana Moharana, based on the first-hand accounts of those invited to tour the spacecraft.
Ed Yong writes: "Long-haulers might not know the biochemical specifics of their symptoms, but they are uncannily good at capturing those underpinnings through metaphor. "
For six months I poured effort into describing the nuance and characterization of my pain and desperate struggle to breathe. Every primary care doc shrugged because "idk, that's not asthma", and it took me 2 pulmonologists to finally get one who listened and said "oh wow you're describing EXACTLY this particular mechanism..."
"…mirrored spheres have been popping up in cities across the world—from New York and São Paulo to Paris and Dubai. No, it's not a global Jeff Koons takeover, nor is it a new interpretation of Cloud Gate. Actually, it is not public art at all but rather an effort by an A.I. company to establish digital identities for the world's citizens by scanning their eyeballs."

Fun fact, the photons I caught from this nebula were created around the time humans first domesticated pigs #astrophotography
There's this woman, black and rather elegantly dressed and accessorized and also masked, who I sometimes see walking through the #NYC #subways (always Times Square?) at a fast pace with all the commuters, but she is PREACHING.
Calling out something in a high, loud, rather rough voice with I think a bit of Jamaican lilt.
And interestingly she is basically incomprehensible. 😁
I'm pretty sure she's speaking English; I think I've caught the occasional "be prepared" or "Jesus". But, even though she seems to be repeating herself pretty frequently, I've been unable to get even the general gist. One assumes, of course. But as far as understanding, her voice might as well be (somewhat strident) instrumental music...
Itchy Sweater
Imagine that you’ve worn an itchy sweater, all day and every day of your life. The sweater fits well and it’s comfortably warm, but it itches like hell. Because you’ve worn the sweater your entire life, you don’t know any better. You’ve learned to live with the constant discomfort. You’ve learned to ignore it as much as possible, to push the itch away. Everybody wears that same sweater and nobody’s complaining about it, so the itch must just be a part of it, right? Don’t complain, just carry on, like everybody else. But then you meet people who say that they’re also bothered by their itchy sweaters, and you find out that the sweaters actually don’t itch for most people, just for some. That you can also just take off the sweater if it does cause you a constant itch. Imagine that after over 40 years of constant itching, you finally work up the courage to take off that sweater. Ahhhhh, finally liberated from the eternal itch! That’s what it felt like for me when I “cast off” my masculinity. A liberation, a feeling of euphoria, a feeling of finally being myself and not having to pretend any longer to be something that I’m not.

July 31 is the last day to take the Annual Contributor Survey!
Please take a few minutes to check it out as it helps the whole community see where we're at and what steps we can take to serve each other better.
If you participate in the project in anyway, we want to hear from you. :)

Here’s my (refreshed) #introduction to the #Mastodon community! 👋
I’m a medical scientist specializing in #genetics and #genetherapy for #RareDiseases. I’ve worked in the #biotechnology industry for over 6 years and I’m very passionate about the power of #Science to make the world better.
I’ll mostly be posting about interesting new ideas and breakthroughs in science, and probably a lot of other stuff I find interesting and/or funny.

Something I think about a lot is making technology my mother could use. My mom is actually quite technically competent, and not afraid of breaking stuff or screwing things up. Her problem instead is that she's deeply impatient with bad design. She gets along poorly with phones and apps and honestly, I can't blame her in the slightest, phones are saturated in bad interfaces.
I should be more like that. It would make me a better developer.
A consciousness somehow associated with matter.
Posting about culture, philosophy, politics, AI Art Tools, NaNoWriMo, Software Development occasionally, the relationship of consciousness to matter.
Degrees in Philosophy and Computer Science, once had a US TS/SCI(redacted) clearance, radical-for-the-US politics, ex-Libertarian, zen-buddhist-pantheist-atheist.
Google employee, but I do not speak for Google in any way.
If your profile tells me nothing about you, it's less likely I'll follow you (back).
