My favorite quote for today:
“One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all.”
― Arthur C. Clarke
"So I got this great idea for a democracy, right?"
"Democracy? Fuck yeah! Like we all vote!"
"Yeah, we all vote! Well...I mean, if you meet the criteria to vote."
"What kind of criteria?"
"We'll, um....we'll get to that later. Point is, we're doing democracy."
"Great, so like we all vote, and whoever gets the most votes becomes President, right?"
"Well....I mean, not exactly."
"We don't?"
"Well you vote, your votes go into a big ol' Electoral College, and then they elect the President."
"Why is there an intermediary?"
"It's just better that way."
"Well, we can at least directly vote on laws and stuff, right?"
"Oh, no, um...see, you vote but then you pick someone to represent you. You're voting for representatives, and they will vote on the laws."
"Wow, another intermediary, okay....um....what about wars and stuff? We get to vote for wars and stuff, right?"
"Nah, the President pretty much unilaterally can deploy them wherever they want in the interest of national security."
"So let me get this straight: This is a democracy where my votes just pick people--and none of the people I vote for might represent my interests when making laws. I'm voting for a President, but not really because my votes don't actually elect the President. The President could get the most votes--and still lose. And when that President comes to power, he can deploy the military as he sees fit, appoint Supreme Court justices that serve for life, and dissolve or break treaties whenever he wants."
"....Yeah?"
"Fuck off, I'm here for real democracy."
I am so excited to share my first article for GhostMag! This discusses one of my favourite subjects - Phantom Monks!
"Someones got to do something or people just nod their head. I'm the person who does something." The #BBC's "R&D Senior Firestarter" Ian Forrester (@cubicgarden) at @publicspaces gave an insight into the BBC's thinking and inspiration ahead of them joining the #fediverse today for a 'six-month experiment' (and doing it seriously via a TLD I didn't even know they owned – https://social.bbc).
Indiana's new law requiring schools to forcibly out #trans kids who mention the pronouns they like to a teacher is going into effect this school year.
My heart is breaking. A certain number of kids *will* be abused and some will become homeless over this.
The cruelty of this wave of anti-trans bigotry doesn't have a boundary.
Everyone loves to talk about child safety but for my entire life cis people have never, ever cared about trans kids.
However, we still have a long way to go in adequately treating ectopic pregnancy. Many families affected by it feel very unsupported and unseen in the emotional side of ectopic pregnancy. Emotions can be complex as a lot has happened: the loss of a pregnancy, concerns about future fertility, trauma following surviving an emergency.
If you're affected by ectopic pregnancy, the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust provide information and support https://ectopic.org.uk/
This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

Ok #Introduction time!
I’m the tech lead / architect for LinkedIn’s ML Infra organization (just started last month), planning scale-out of our LLM and LPM (and GNN) infra, among other things. I’ve done many Search, ML, and “relevance” related things at many places over the last 2 decades (including building the original personalization team at birdsite), but was originally planning a career in particle theory (and/or pure math). Hence the handle.

It's 1993. #Debian vs #Slackware. Which #Linux do you install on your PC?
Question: Might this be a serviceable potentiometer to use in a set of DIY C64 paddles? I know it's 500kΩ instead of 470KΩ, but it's a linear pot with the right size, and seems close enough to me?

So there is a cute #bluesky thing where you can change your "handle" to be (in?) a domain ("domain") other than .bsky.social, by putting magic stuff into a TEXT record in the DNS entry for the domain.
So I could potentially be ceoln.theogeny.com on Bluesky.
Which is sort of confusing, really what would the syntax be for that?
I think I prefer #mastodon 's "verification" via putting a "me" link onto a web page.
But on the other hand I like doing cute weird little things, so I might do the #bluesky domain thing. Some day. :) ...
There's a LOT of social networks you can be part of -- and it can be exhausting. A quick opinion column from yours truly, talking Twitter/X, Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky, Instagram... and they keep on coming!

The vagueness of these laws is the point. That way no matter what teachers are teaching, some right wing radical parents funded by billionaires can file complaints resulting in the teacher losing their job.
I'm so glad these teachers are banding together to fight it. I hope they win.

I guess I am now something like
https://bsky.app/profile/ceoln.bsky.social
on #Bluesky (bsky?), if that's even a thing one can be. Is that only visible to other bsky members that are logged on? Or something?
I find it all very unclear and don't really know why I'd want to be there except I seem to always get on various things.
@mekkaokereke @orionkidder I still remember the feeling of shock and betrayal I felt when I randomly stumbled across the UC charter and it said right there tuition was to be free.
