Posted in the weblog (rather than inflicting it all on Mastodon)!

Returning to my (far-too) close reading of "The Pleasure of the Text".

"WHO said that even though the emergency phase was over, the pandemic hasn't come to an end, noting recent spikes in cases in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The UN health agency says that thousands of people are still dying from the virus every week."
Not to mention we are firmly in a wave here in Canada now.

Politicians cannot end a pandemic. Only science can. Science says pandemic is still on.

Stop being a covid denier.

"I am honored to be a banned book whenever it happens, because I look at the history of books that have been banned; the history of who bans them. I will never be on the side of the people who ban the books. I'm on the other side. I will always be on the side of the libraries."

I'm in the same boat. Mastodon is by far the best Twitter alternative because of the opensource, non-corporate nature of it.

But I started a Bluesky account yesterday just to have a way to keep in touch with my Twitter friends who seem to find Mastodon intimidating for some reason.

I'm crowgirl@bluesky, but don't expect me to post there as much as Mastodon, the platform I'm more loyal too.

Jack Dorsey is a billionaire shithead and I resent having a Bluesky account now.

An essay by me meditating on "The Mind Club" -- a book about the fascinating psychology of "mind perception" ...

... i.e. the unspoken rules by which we humans perceive another entity as having a "mind": A dog, a self-driving car, ChatGPT ...

... and what implications this for the moral and ethical fabric of our machine age

It's interesting, they did studies of children and found out that kids rarely develop PTSD from the kind of trauma that would permanently fuck up an adult person. The reason, apparently, is that kids play. Play is a way of integrating experiences into your consciousness. It works with adults, too. Playing can help handle trauma. Just another way in which a UBI would help with unfucking society, you'd avoid having millions of traumatised adults walking around like zombies just trying to function day after day.

Russia uses tactics like information laundering, persona accounts, ghostwriters, paid local media, & proxy websites to make outward-facing Russian propaganda look organic, local, & homegrown — & to evade the bans that were imposed when they invaded Ukraine. They have a pretty large number of dormant persona accounts that they can activate when needed — like when their official accounts got banned — & then use the personas to peddle Kremlin propaganda while posing as citizens of other countries.

I know this is just dancing on a grave, but everybody who promoted NFTs as a way to support artists was a fucking conman and a lot of us tried to tell you so. theverge.com/2023/8/17/2383644

Fun #physics fact for #Caturday

#Cats exist in a quantum superposition of two states: "pet me" and "how dare you touch me you hairless ape". It is only by touching them that their wave function collapses to one of these states.

I created many free downloadable comics that teachers and parents can use to help kids understand difficult concepts such as climate change, refugees, peer reviewed studies, neurodiversity, gender stereotypes, and many more. Download them here:

Don't discuss their talking points. Fight them in the arena of #framing now, so you don't have to fight them in the streets later.

So are any journalists looking into the story about Kenneth Chesebro making millions on Bitcoin?

A friend who is more familiar with crypto regulation than I am just pointed out that there's, uh, a lot of opportunity for bribery and money laundering in that space.
