Which app are people using for Mastodon on iPhone? Typing in my laptop like it's the 00's but cannot seem to find my fediscience server to log in on the mastodon app I downloaded... I'm sure this is easier than it feels :)

If you're concerned about whether Mastodon can handle stress from growth, here's ways you can alleviate it:

1. Join a small instance
2. Start an instance, and let others join
3. Start a single-user instance that only hosts yourself

In case you wonder what I do: I run a small last-mile Internet operation in rural Eastern Poland (no, that's not me in the picture, that's our technician)

I'm thinking of donating to a few services, products and organisations that I use and respect, and that I think are doing a lot of good. (That on top of my yearly 10% #EffectiveAltruism donation and the tiny contributions that I do every month through #BraveBrowser.)

I'm making a little list of beneficiaries. My idea is to throw ~1m₿ to each project, or the equivalent in fiat.

I'll share the list soon. There are some obvious entries (eg, Wikimedia Foundation, F-Droid, Mastodon), but if you want to suggest something specific, I'm all ears!

Honestly, I'm kind of enjoying the different way of interacting with content on Mastodon.

I almost NEVER re-tweeted anything on Twitter since it usually just unnecessarily filled up people's timeline. Since that is HOW your timeline is created here, I've felt a lot more comfortable boosting people's content that I think are awesome!

1. at the top of your notifications column, there is an icon with three horizontal lines/sliders. Click on it.
2. It will expand into a menu where you can turn off "play sound" for each type of notification.
3. Scroll down for more notification types, turning off as you go.
4. Enjoy blissful silence without having to mute the whole tab.

Starting to see trolls on here in the last few days. I learned long ago on twitter that you don't engage them in any way. Block them immediately, without a second thought. If they're using racist/sexist/etc language, report them. Oh, and the ability to block an entire server in one click is amazing (last option on the three dots button by the troll's name). I've already blocked one server with an obviously trollish name. (PS my first cw post. Seems like a great feature!)

For the new guys here, I can explain Mastodon.

Mastodon is a high school where the nerds, the sports guys, the mean girls, the popular students and the teachers are all speaking with each other.

The Federated timeline is like the cafeteria, where everyone talks together.

The Local timeline is the toilet rooms, where the members of a group talk to each other in the same group.

And the Fediverse is an ensemble of independently hosted servers that use web publishing protocols in order to communicate between each other by using decentralized methods of communication.

Easy to understand 🤷‍♂️
