Free list of over 400 literary magazines that accept free submissions, you're welcome to share with anyone. This is a list I kept originally for myself, but friends were interested and so I made it public. https://crowcollectiveworkshops.com/free-submissions/
If you're #new:
Note that you can pin multiple things here on Mastodon!
Pin your #introduction and some of your #writing so it doesn't get buried in your feed
I am also loving the bookmark functionality in case there are posts you want to return to later that you don't necessarily want to emphasize publicly
We're a few days into the current wave of #TwitterMigration, and we're all excited for all the #NewHere folks to have joined.
But please be mindful you are joining a social network that was not a barren, desolate desert before. It was a blooming, cozy garden.
It's not just about finding your old connections from
, it's also about making new valuable connections with folks on here, who might have moved years ago, or who might have never had an account on hellbird.
... and my AV (pfp) is an adorable Delirium Cultist made with #midjourney . I am hoping it does not look enough like (say) an anime character that people might... make incorrect assumptions about me.
Apparently one can pin multiple posts? If so, here's the link right into the draft of my #midjourney 2022 book: https://ceoln.wordpress.com/about/various-flings-nanowrimo-2022/
A quick note of something that may be important for people to know: I already noted that DMs here are a bit sketchy security wise, but (THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT): if you mention someone else's account in a DM, Mastodon, yoinks them into the conversation.
So, you know, if you think you're talking about someone behind their back, you might be doing it to their face.
An #introduction:
Bachelor's degree in #Philosophy from Princeton, 1981, which makes me ?good at ?discussion?.
#Zen #Buddhist #Pantheist #atheist
#Radical (for the US) #politics, in that I think power should be more fairly distributed than it is now,.
Master's in #compsci from Pace, 1985ish; professional #coder for like 40 years, mostly for #IBM and now for #google (all opinions strictly my own, of course, not theirs!), mostly on the #systems side. #cpp and anything else really, they're just languages. :)
Greatly enjoy #writing, and I've done a number of #nanowrimo novels (working on the dozenth in 2022). Have also greatly enjoyed playing with #gpt3.
I have no visual skills, but lately I've been producing thousands of images using #midjourney and a few with other text-to-image tools. The future is wild!
Okay this might be a long post
One thing that I realised is making #twittermigration harder for people to switch is because the whole concept can feel daunting & overwhelming for non-tech savvy people.
With Twitter to them it was straight forward and easy to find topics they enjoy but with mastodon its a bit different.
So if you're new to mastodon or you want to introduce someone to mastodon here are some tips, useful sites & tools:
### Tips:
- Choosing a home instance isn't as importance as it seems, don't overthink it. Yes moderation rules & policies may differ but they all have one thing in common: Be a decent human. You **always** have the option to migrate your account to a new instance.
- Toots (or posts if you think toots are cringe
) are what we call micro-blogging instead of tweets
- You’re supposed to "boost" AKA "reblog" toots that you like.Since Mastodon does not have an algorithm that surfaces toots that have been liked a lot, boosting is the best way to help spread stuff that you like, and to show appreciation. (credit to @orsvarn for this comment)
- Another way to fill your timeline with content you enjoy is to: Find other people with similar interests, follow them, favourite their posts, boost their posts, use hashtags. rinse, repeat. (credit to @garry)
- If you ever feel yourself getting sucked into arguments on the #Fediverse, you might want to take advantage of the instance mute/block feature!
Instances tend to foster a culture, so if you find people from a specific site tend to be bothering you, muting/blocking that instance will keep other members of that community from bothering you as well.
- Finally do not share private/sensitive information via DMs on Mastodon. Direct Messages are not E2E. **Keep it in mind**

I'm only a few days into using Mastodon and, hands down, the absolute highlight so far has been reading people's #introduction toots because:
1. I've come into contact with so many people with whom I otherwise wouldn't have seen.
2. This very much seems to be a platform that encourages reading, talking and sharing, not furiously typing out a response or shouting.
Over the weekend, every time I have popped across to read my feed, I've left thinking, "how wonderful". And that is, well, wonderful.
long covid, personal
So Dave Navarro has long covid:
"So yeah, I'm one of the ones who came down with the 'long haul covid. Been sick since December and supposedly will be back to my old self in… nobody knows how long. If there are any of you who are still suffering long after your negative results, I'm just saying you aren't alone. The fatigue and isolation is pretty awful but try to spend your time with the ones you love and stay creative. That's how I'm trying to get through this thing. Also lots of spiritual practices, meditation and yoga have been very helpful. I'll be OK, just don't know when."
I've been down since Jan and honestly it's not surprising how few personal experiences you read, because it's exhausting and it's isolating and besides, we're gonna be fine tomorrow, right?
I've been writing about it across two alts, because I've been able to write pretty coherently and know some folks really want to hear about it, but recently realized I've locked nearly every post. (And Dave here has removed his; I pulled it from a news article). I don't want to inflict whining and fear on people who aren't consenting, and I absolutely do not want to invite "try this homeopathic bullshit" or "mind over matter" or "long covid is a vaccine reaction" and have to waste my time suspending accounts. And there is certainly much worse that can come out of these infections.
But, like, I do want to say that dear lord this is absolutely wretched, it is absolutely happening to people you know and hollowing them out, and if you're feeling like trash because of it and want some company, please DM me, because it has really been helping me to hear from others and I care about your experiences and would love to help cheer for your recovery. This may still be my only fully public post about it, but if you're doing this alone, please don't.
