Zero words so far today (I DEFINITELY blame #mastodon!), but I should be able to crank out a quick 2K after dinner.
Right? :)
#introduction I'm a historian of technology who has also worked on history of women in science and environmental history. I'm near retirement and in recent years I have mostly been doing general education and digital history program development. At the moment I'm an activist mostly about COVID safety, but I try to speak up for the concerns of my younger colleagues because I am no longer vulnerable.
If you're wondering/worrying about Mastodon's sustainability have a look at a recent paper I co-wrote on the sustainability of open source projects. We described 3 types of OS sustainability (resource-based, interactional & infrastructural), and Mastodon's recent massive surge would appear to tick all 3 boxes! https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0960085X.2022.2046516
Hi all!
I'm Jess - a trans and disabled activist, journalist, writer, speaker, and legal researcher. My research focuses on trans and disability law and policy issues, and especially where these intersect.
You can find my work here:

@ceoln I like to reblog people and share their #writing, #work, and #interests, of course... But more than that, every so often I'll do a mass gathering of #AmQuerying letters and/or #pitches and share what I can of my experience to help polish them up... That and I selectively read new author's #ScienceFiction, #specfic, #horror, and even some other not-so-in-my-wheelhouse genres and age ranges so that #writers (and I) can find a new perspective through a #writer buddy. #WritingCommunity
I'm a big #wikidata fan. Among other tasks, it can help to connect #Jewish #art #collectors who died in the #Holocaust or in exile
to the artworks in their #collections
and to the current possessors or #museums. As data gets added and #Sparql queries improved, a fuller picture of the #patterns emerge. #digitalhumanities #histodon

New instance, new #introduction.
Forgive the # for a moment.
I am a #queer #disabled #SFF #author.
She/her or they/them.
I speak #English and a little #Español, #ASL, and #C# and #python.
I have fairly severe #EhlersDanlos / #EDS, #POTS, #migraines, #ChronicPain.
I am a #socialist organizer with #DSA, most interested in #feminism and #MutualAid.
I enjoy #punk, #ska, #FolkPunk, and lately I'm on a #metal kick.
I do #VisualArts, #FiberArts, and #FireSpinning, though these things are somewhat dialed back because my bones suck.
***
I will do my best to post accessibly, including image descriptions and avoiding flashing lights.
I will CW for things like violence, nudity, and hate speech.
I will not CW for cursing, food, politics, or eye contact. If you need CWs for these things, it's okay not to follow me! I just do all of these things a lot, so you wouldn't see most of my posts anyway.
I am not here to play a follower count game. If I see you, and you make interesting original posts, I might follow you. If you post a lot of sexually graphic content, I probably won't. It's not personal. I'm just trying to cultivate a space I enjoy.
Hope to see you around 💜

#Tips #Mastodon #Question about monetization
@odanu as @maloki points out: big companies are gonna have to run their own nodes so most of the vets can blanket block and the few who wanna follow can w/o disrupting the networks good nature
if youre into creating cool things and are an ‘indie’ you can self-promo but some of the bigger names split between a personal account somewhere and their main ‘indie business’ separate (we all have our $moneyFace and $whewImTired face and sometimes the latter you dont want as strongly connect to the former)
there are some places like handmade.social that are focused on helping with some of the monetization stuff too ; i plan on poking around their instance for holiday gifts this year. @maker posts all the new accounts and boosts a bunch of products folks are posting
if folk are trying to just survive while doing community supports youll see a lot of go fund me and ko-fi and similar but its interwoven based on need over time with the rest of their normal posts which outstrip the monetization ones
folk are good about boosting/faving if youve got the format right and if not you can always say ‘i think i got this right, id like to fundraise w/o pissing all yall off, let me know if i missed the mark’
if folk ask for help nicely its generally given. but i think youve sorted that out already 😉
My #introduction... I am the author of the #SevenStarsSaga published by #AethonBooks.
I love to make costumes, cosplay, and occasionally she plays D&D or MTG with friends during summer vacation.
I am inspired by LeGuin’s The Dispossessed and my two feisty grandmas. I also work with several amazing #writing groups, frequently getting to read and critique wonderful unpublished work, and love to boost new #writers from my #writingcommunity.
I saw a tip to post some #writing for the #writingcommunity to see and pin it. So... Let's give you some of my new #horror #novel. A little over 150 words.

#Introduction I have just finished my PhD on the uses of Facebook and Twitter by four museums (BE/LU) and their audiences. My PhD research focused on online participation, rethinking access (to the #Museums and #SNS, as public sphere), visible and invisible use(r)s, present and missing data.
Apart from research, I sew, I'm a #Knitter and love #TextileHistory, I garden on my balcony #SmallSpaceGardening and Brittany is my happy place.
Zomg it's AstroKatie!
@smitty Yes! The "old internet" never went away. It got sidelined by corporate internet, but it's always been there, and it's nice that we get to rediscover it.
I wrote an essay the other day that traces the history of social networks through the development of personal computing, and the tension between hacker culture and corporate monetization. You can see the ideas of decentralization and federation as early as the 1970s.
