The attitude of gratitude beats enragement for engagement.

American politics and journalism

Could you guys recommend some people to follow to stay updated on the US midterm elections?

People claiming Mastodon will never work because it's too complicated are the one who would have said that the internet was going to be a fad

A word of advice from others - since the servers communicate, you don't necessarily have to sign up on one of the busier ones. For instance, I chose one that seems more to align with my interests, but if you search (for instance) for hashtag you will be able to see very helpful posts.

Here is my obligatory .

I’ve worked in the fields of and for over two decades. My degrees are in mechanical engineering, but I’ve spent many years both professionally and recreationally crossing over into the computer science realm when it intersects with my interests and projects.

I’ve been a user since the mid-90s, and I’ve been paid to admin Linux and Unix number-crunching boxes, including Irix, HP-UX, AIX, and other fun OSes that either don’t exist anymore or you probably haven’t heard of.

I enjoy programming, especially , , and , although I’ve used another dozen or so languages along the way, everything from FORTRAN to Perl and TCL to Haskell (and lots in between). I’m an electronic hobbyist, and you may find me tinkering with and boards.

My technical interests also include , , /#numericalmethods, , , , and .

I like making things, so my hobbies include , , and . I also love and reading, with a proclivity towards , , , , , , and classical .

I like to listen to and play . I play and dabble in lots of other instruments. My favorite styles of music are , , and , but I enjoy a diverse mix of genres, so you might catch me listening to Cat Stevens and Tom Lehrer one day and Johnny Cash and Eminem the next.

I love , mountains and oceans, , and . I like to to new places, see new things, and experience the local food and culture. Speaking of , I like to .

I also like gaming, especially on my and .

In recent years, we became too comfortable letting #Twitter define journalism & media. Algorithms often dictated the narratives we collectively paid attention to.

Absurd trends were covered by news outlets & ballooned into major stories while we missed so much real substance. And the quick takes of uninformed politicians & bad actors were forced upon anyone participating in the network.

It was bad for democracy. The #Mastodon model makes me hopeful we can do better. #twittermigration

Hey all, I'm Rae! I'm a software engineer by day, and amateur radio operator by night. Enjoy programming, tinkering with electronics, building antenna, and causing problems.

Three days ago Mastodon felt like a labyrinth of confusion. I was a wobbly foal.Today I migrated to a new instance. And I know what an instance is. Look at me, fancy pants.

So uhh,

I guess I'm creating a shitposting instance for fake brands tomorrow.

I won't tell everyone when it's online. You'll know!

But, if anyone wants to make up a fake, wacky brand, create bad ads with clipart, and develop fake turf wars and extensive lore, DM me. We will LARP corporations.

As more and more instances temporarily close down registrations to deal with the load, I see people complaining that it's "exclusionary", peddling hot-takes how that "proves" that "Mastadon(sic) won't scale", and so on.

I am going to bet it's at least to some extent the same people that were thrilled with excitement when the last time a walled garden was doing a "closed, invite-only beta" and they got on the wait list.

No such hot-takes then, huh? :thaenkin:

I thought a would help me to manage my but the pressure of seeing my deadlines move further and further out as I fail to stick to plans paralyzes me instead.

Having my entire life charted out is the kind of existential pressure I cannot handle. Has anyone else with ADHD had success with Gantt charts? How do you use them?

What has helped me is a manager. There are many such apps out there. Go through them until you find the perfect one for you. I ultimately landed on Tusk—it has all the functionality I need and is monetized thru a sale rather than subscription model. play.google.com/store/apps/det

A to-do list is not going to cure your ADHD but it does help, especially if it's always with you on your phone and automatically notifies you about your responsibilities. That takes much of the organizational burden off of you and helps you to focus on simply completing tasks instead.

Grumpiness, interdisciplinarity

Just turned down an invitation to be on a panel, where one of the questions was "Is domain expertise, like linguistics, necessary for the design of #nlp benchmarks?"

And then I had to stop and ask myself: Did they really just invite me to be on a panel to debate whether or not I should be on that panel?

Also: Yes, yes it is. And if you're still "debating" that, you clearly haven't kept up with the SOTA.

Talked to someone two days ago about #Mastodon and they thought it sounded a bit strange.

Today they are asking me what server they should join. Change happens quicker than you think.

Thanks to @davidoclubb for promoting the protocol and @jaz for running this instance.
