@rysiek I work in an #accessibility focussed company and I’ve beeen delighted with the alt as standard and the general feel, and positive vibes. I can’t wait to spread the accessible word. Also I’ve always been weird, I’ve found my spirit social!

I've been using the official Mastodon app just to get started, but am finding that it's a bit clunky. I suspect it will get some development attention with the #twittermigration, but in the meantime I found this article helpful, reviewing 8 apps in total (including the official one).

Trans Safety, media advisory

There is an ITV documentary crew doing the rounds looking for trans people using DIY HRT sources.

While there are no clear red flags it's worth asking:

1. What would you be getting in return for being put at risk by being on camera?
2. What Trans input is there into the questions addressed by this documentary content? Are they seriously including our views or are they just gawping at the desperate state of our healthcare?
3. What have they done to build trust?

"If you want people to migrate to your site you need to do x"

We don't have targets, there's no end-of-year bonus.

We just want to make something lovely and gentle where people can spend time and be themselves and learn about each other. On a website where they're not tracked and graded and machine-learned about all the time. With no compromises to commerce.

Personal note, I'm just one mod, is that this should be an act of collective self-care. Christ knows we need it.

Love to all.

A discussion about distributed federated systems else-network did bring up some concerning history that we should keep in mind:

#XMPP was, briefly, the dominant messaging system on the Internet. It was fully federated allowing hosting anywhere. Major extensions were being done by major companies (Apple adding voice and video for example). And it all fell apart because the three big providers (Apple, Google, Facebook) ditched it to have more control.

On the Icelandic fediverse/Mastodon I've started seeing people using the word "tútta" for "toot". "tútta" (pronounced toot-ta) is normally a slang term for a boob/tit.

Please reboob this.

In France, all large parking areas will now have to be covered over by solar panels.
What a fabulous idea.

@ejoftheweb @jburnmurdoch @t0nyyates
The German Data Commissioner is advocating that all public bodies should leave Facebook (and presumably Twitter) and use open platforms instead.

Various German bodies and authorities have already created their own Mastodon servers, as have many EU agencies and the Commission.

What I am appreciating here on #Mastodon is, not only welcoming old friends, but following new ones. Long standing Mastodonians with interesting minds and lives. The cooperative model is brilliant. I have spent part of my academic career studying co-ownership and mutuality. #Mastodon is an exemplar of the #NewEconomy. Finally, it is just refreshing to show a little more of oneself. To share hobbies & interests beyond the political struggle.

The entirety of Twitter academic / research teams have gone the same way as the Trust and Safety, curation and human rights teams. I can’t help feeling API access is in borrowed time, and that even if not, it will degrade. Researchers will conceivably be without Twitter and Crowdtangle access in a matter of months. What are the alternatives ? Anyone who wants to add research groups or initiatives here - please do!

Hey Folks! I guess I need a new #Introduction thread. I'm Bel and am mostly known for being terminally online since the 90s and for writing a daily blog and recording a weekly podcast with some of my friends.

Most of my content tends to be focused on #VideoGames and more specifically #MMO and #MMORPG games. I occasionally write about some of the dumb things I do to technology to make it work precisely as I want it to.

I have three cats and I am certain you will see pictures of them.

Since many of us are here due to the #TwitterMigration and are relatively "fresh" at following folks - what are the three main reasons you'd follow someone here?

For me it's:

1. They said something interesting or educational that made me think;

2. They followed me and they look interesting; and/or

3. We have common interests as evidenced by posts, bios, and/or hashtags (which means finding community)

I wonder if this service named after the great confession of Bertie Wooster’s: “As a rule, you see, I'm not lugged into Family Rows. On the occasions when Aunt is calling Aunt like mastodons bellowing across premieval swamps … the clan has a tendency to ignore me.”
