Hi friends, if you want to join us on episode 5 of Mystery AI Hype Theater by @alexhanna and @emilymbender, it will be in 1.5 hours at this link: http://twitch.tv/katesilver538. Will also be on YouTube for those who miss it. Or maybe we should start using the fediverse version of YouTube.
#Introduction
Hello! I’m happy to be getting on the toots.
I’m an Aussie #librarian working for an NGO and currently based in Switzerland. I primarily manage e-resources, but also dabble in web dev, reference duties etc.
I’m a fan of #rstats and I’m currently focused on stuff to do with getting/wrangling/communicating #OpenAthens and #Alma + #Primo data.
Tried watching #Netflix's new show about the last #BlockBuster, especially because I like a number of the actors in it.
But they might as well just call it "Stereotypes: The Show".
It's *really* bad.
Unintended #TwitterTakeover impact: #Tesla no longer being considered for a vehicle purchase in our family, and we're not the only ones in our social circle. Huge impact to the brand, IMHO.
I don't have time to do it, but here is an appeal for #help from someone I know:
> #Help wanted: Code review for Mindfulness at the computer
Hi all, the design is now finally complete for the application Mindfulness at the computer which i have been working on as a hobby project for a long time. I’d like to do a #codereview and could use help from people experienced with one or both of the following:
- #Python (for #review of #backend or #frontend #code)
- #Qt, or #gui applications in general (for review of frontend code)
Are you willing to help out, or do you know of any programmers who could be interested?

Good morning, Mastoworld. Enjoy a giant steampunk robot elephant. These are from the Isle of Machines in Nantes, that uses old shipbuilding tech to make marvels. #SomethingBeautiful
Ha, yet another tag that's just occurred to me! I have a #windows machine for like gaming and running the GIMP, but usually I'm on #ChromeOS . Because it's great!
(Is there a native #ChromeOS client that's worth using? So far I'm pretty happy with the qoto web interface, and in fact generally find that web interfaces are better than your average ChromeOS specific client, but who knows!)
Sure, let's do it!
To help make connections: name things that interest you, but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then, boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.

(That last one's in my profile, because it's literally my job, but it's the most interesting thing to me, and I love to connect with others in the book community!)
If you've read enough election news, I've got an exclusive on the Alphabet X moonshot lab's first big move into carbon removal: An effort to measure and incentivize seagrass restoration projects https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/09/1062847/inside-alphabet-xs-new-effort-to-combat-climate-change-with-seagrass/
Remember folks, you're not some kind of a baddie if a particular Mastodon server isn't for you. There's load of them and lots are great.
Mastodon is set up so you can move gaff, and your friends and followers can find you easily and sometimes even automatically.
You can use one place to git gud, and find your happy place somewhere else.
Social media #algorithms magnify societal biases.
Here's a striking example. Enigma is an #infosec conference that works hard at gender diversity. Yet the most viewed talks are almost all by (white) men. https://www.youtube.com/c/USENIXEnigmaConference/videos (switch to the "popular" tab).
If users are 5% more likely to click on thumbnails conforming to the stereotype of an infosec expert, the algorithm will reflect that in its recommendations, and also *compound* that bias over time.
This needs to be better known.
Rejoice #BookHistory #Manuscripts Studies #palaeography #paleography #incunabula etc. scholars: there is now a #BookHistodons group you can follow: @bookhistodons
A group is a handle/account you can follow which gathers all Mastodon posts mentioning the group. (NB: You must mention the group, @bookhistodons It won’t grab posts with just the hashtag alone.) Enjoy—& spread the word!

Let's see. One thing I haven't talked about much is my #Zen #Buddhist involvement.
Which is entirely appropriate :) since my favorite phrase in this area is "language can't express truth"; but we muddle through anyway.
I have a (by some standards, nonexistent) #shikantaza (and so technically #soto I guess, and I do adore ol' #Dogen) practice, where I sit for some amount of time, watching thoughts and phenomena arise and dissipate, with no particular aim. This is, like, the best thing in the world!
I took part in r/zen for awhile, but it was (and maybe still is) a permanent trashfire dominated by a small group of people with their own bizarre ideas about Zen and an endless appetite for pointless conflict, which is sort of sad.
I don't have a local (or online) #sangha, really. I've done a couple of two or three day retreats at #ZMM , and they were great.
But mostly I just exist, to the limited extent that those words have any meaning. :)
Willing and even eager to discuss all this sort of thing with anyone here who is interested!
It confuses me that so many people are saying they are lost here. Just sit still, watch the #fediverse world go by in your local feed. Just let the interesting people float by for you to follow or not as you please.

Hello, #histodons! Welcome to my attempt at an #introduction...
I'm an #18c specialist, focusing on the history of the senses, history of color, and the history of France.
I love anything quirky, scandalous, unexpected, or over the top.
Since leaving academia, I've branched out with my writing interests, and I have a book on #bluejeans coming out in January.
I'm also a #ghostwriter. At the moment, I #amreading anything written by Flaubert.
Hi, I'm a computational linguist: I develop models of how people learn language and use language, and I test those models on real-world data. One focus of my work has been on lexical semantics, looking at how the meanings of words can be learnt from context, and indeed how meanings should be represented in the first place. This work is necessarily interdisciplinary, drawing on linguistics, philosophy of language, cognitive science, and machine learning.
A consciousness somehow associated with matter.
Posting about culture, philosophy, politics, AI Art Tools, NaNoWriMo, Software Development occasionally, the relationship of consciousness to matter.
Degrees in Philosophy and Computer Science, once had a US TS/SCI(redacted) clearance, radical-for-the-US politics, ex-Libertarian, zen-buddhist-pantheist-atheist.
Google employee, but I do not speak for Google in any way.
If your profile tells me nothing about you, it's less likely I'll follow you (back).
