I should probably do an #introduction post again huh?

Today’s Far Side is on topic for this place! It’s like a rerun gift from Gary Larson to us all. https://www.thefarside.com

Someday, perhaps, the hype of skin
will be less about melanin...
But til that day I hope you wear
what nature gave without despair,
that pride is part of who you are
as much as any random star
whose aspect close is red or blue
but from a distance shines a hue
too bright to adequately define
your light... it sparkles just like mine.
5-7 books to something something about me? Good Lord. Um...
Okay, "A Wrinkle in Time", that's like a free space.
Thaddeus Golas, "A Lazy Man's Guide To Enlightenment".
Robinson, "A Short, Sharp Shock".
Me, "All Reality" (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KH-ZR3A8va_QVaVVP5EWb3SIUUJF2o0g65hOV3pVspA/)
Ram Dass, "Be Here Now"
I don't know! Maybe Morick (ed) "Challenges to Empiricism".
Ooh how about Abbott's "Flatland"?
"Principia Discordia" of course.
Darn, that's eight already, and I haven't listed "The Wind in the Willows" yet, which should probably have been first.
And lots more!!
Going to try to watch some old sci-fi movies about spaceships & aliens from the 50s & call it research. I can do that, lol.
That kind of justification is the only way that I can convince myself to sit & watch something entertaining for more than a few minutes.
Suggestions welcome, earlier stuff as well. I've already seen The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Thanks to @frooned for this particular inspiration.
but yeah I have seen a few tech people claiming that fedi is doomed as a social network because the ~regular~, everyday, non-techy people will NEVER be able to figure out how to use mastodon, and that has been feeling a little bit weird and patronising to me, a non-tech-y person
and also just kind of funny because I have never heard that said about tumblr, and yet, tumblr currently has me wanting to throw my laptop at the wall
#toronto has the amazing Evergreen Brickworks, a former industrial site and city dump that is now a wonderful park. We need more like this. #photography
Having run my own test mastodon server, I can tell you that boosting is REALLY important. That's how posts propagate between servers that are not federated together.
I may get a bit technical, and it can be hard to describe but it's something like this:
Let's say that you have 2 servers, A and B that are not connected. They have their own federated timelines that is vastly different.
let's assume they have their users @a@A and @b@B that are mutuals. If user @a@A sees something interesting on theirs federated timeline and boosts it, user @b@B will see that on their own home page. But more importantly server B will now know about and download that post, and everyone else on B server will be able to see that post on their own federated timeline!
And that's why you boost, guys! It helps posts to spread.
This is a fun idea

You know what I’m really appreciative of most of my 2 weeks on Mastodon? Yes I’ve seen some great people migrate from the bird site, I’ve been able to connect with more meaning. But… all of the LGBTQIA community and amazing creatives, I never would have come across on the bird site because they either felt marginalised & stayed quiet or the algorithm kept their voices buried. I’ve seen some beautiful posts from some beautiful people here, and I’m feeling so much better about my new normal ❤️
How can a tumultuous crowd-sourced unpaid open free-for-all—Wikipedia—handle the most controversial history in the making and get it, mostly, right?
Fine essay by Heather Ford. (And I was there, too, in Alexandria, 2008.)
OMG - I just realized Mastodon has the ability to mute people for predefined periods of time. I've wanted this feature for years. Too often I've muted someone I really like because they're live tweeting an event or something like that, only to forget to unmute them until months later. The ability to mute someone for just a day or two is big for me personally.
