A banger:

"These myths are making online interactions worse, but there’s one falsehood that underpins all five: that problems with online communities can be fixed by technology alone."

"To run a community of any kind is to enter a morally complex space, containing profound questions around acceptable speech, punishment and appeal, implicit and explicit bias, and various other social complexities, many of which are thousands of years old."

Please keep inviting your disabled/chronically ill friends to things. We can't always come, but it means a lot to know we're still wanted.

My social circle has dwindled *dramatically* since I got sick, and the pandemic cut off 80% of what remained.

Even if I say no a lot it doesn't mean I never want to come. In fact, it means I want to see people more, when I'm able.

🎂 It’s hard for me to admit it. But I need your help. Please follow my soon-to-premier podcast #BookedUp and listen to our trailer.

Let’s prove that I don’t need to be on Twitter to promote the inaugural episode that drops on my birthday — December 4. First guest is Dahlia Lithwick who will talk about LADY JUSTICE, chaos muppets, bobbins, and wearing Ax body spray.

Liberating books! #librarygeeking

The Internet Archive has scanned thousands of books that have not gotten the date set via metadata matching, which means we dont know which are public domain... (1927 is coming up on Jan 1!)

so... now I have a command line to find candidate public domain books by grep'ing the full text for "Copyright 19XX" for xx between 00 and 27.

Now we have to QA, update, and liberate!

So this image is a great visual for teaching about trauma. None of the plates are broken and they’ll stay in tact as long as we don’t open the door. But they’re also not usable that way.

If we open the hutch, some of them will probably fall and break, but we can’t clean up and see what’s still salvageable until we do.

We can prepare before opening the door so that as little as possible gets broken - that’s skill building.

MASTODON TIP: If you have somebody whose posts you love, and you want to be notified whenever they post, just click on the bell button in the advanced web interface, and you will receive a notification whenever they toot! (I don't know how many of the mobile clients have this option, though.)

These are the 10 largest countries in the world imagined at the equator for size comparison.

They look different because a traditional Mercator map distorts countries, making them appear larger toward the poles.

You can make comparisons at thetruesize.com #world

I spend a lot of time out in #nature, exploring the #southwest. This is Metate Arch in #escalante #utah

It's an outstanding natural area - which is not just a cute thing I'm saying - it's actually designated by the government as an Outstanding Natural Area.

Utah is a wonderland for photographers, we're blessed to have parked our rig here.

Last I like to think that most users here recognize if mastodon were to somehow trip fall and stumble into being a new defacto home for things like Trans Twitter, Disabled Twitter and especially Black Twitter that's basically like winning the lottery for content.

Welcome to being a cultural hub. A wellspring of political and social creativity.

We should be so lucky as to "suffer" an invasion. We should dare to hope.

Twitter never deserved what it had.

Nobody Owns This Place

I want everyone to feel welcome here, like there's a space for every opinion and mode of communication.

I want thoughtful Alt text on every single image. But I'm not about to shame people who don't. I just am less-likely to Boost it.

There are tools in Mastodon designed to minimize conflict, and for those who came from a site that thrived on it, this can be a big adjustment.

It's a much more "agree to disagree" kind of space, or really it's "agree to disengage."

This is my contribution to #Mosstodon for today. It's an image of a local stream flowing past moss-covered banks on the Southern Shore of Newfoundland and Labrador Canada. The local micro climate is called a "fog forest." I would not be surprised if fairies live nearby.

Reading the replies to black people on here is really discouraging. Being anti-capitalist is not sufficient to dismantle systems of oppression. A distributed social media system isn’t the solution to racism. If we can’t tackle the real issues, then this FOSS playpen is just one more arena to enact violence.

Whiteness⟨™⟩

My rants do not belong in someone else's comments, so here is a shiny new thread of my own.

I am thinking about Whiteness as a Thing & the escape velocity it takes to escape the gravity of that complacency.

I've spent a lot of today seeing a lot of (fellow) white people get very upset at PoC for mentioning their whiteness.

It's the same fucking compulsion as when TERFs object to being called cis, btw.

They think they are default, normal, unmarked.
