We are kicking off this week with an update on pro-trans legislation introduced across the U.S. last week. #TransRights 🏳️⚧️
From when I visited the Victoria Butterfly Gardens in British Columbia Canada. My iNaturalist app has identified it as a Diadem, and gave the following information: “Hypolimnas is a genus of tropical brush-footed butterflies commonly known as eggflies or diadems. The genus contains approximately 23 species, most of which are found in Africa, Asia, and Oceania.” #AltText #Butterflies #Insects #Nature #Photography
The amazing @equalityAlec exposes "how journalists use seemingly innocuous but subjective descriptions to smuggle political, ideological, and moral judgments into supposedly objective news reporting." This guy is on fire. https://open.substack.com/pub/equalityalec/p/how-to-smuggle-ideology-into-the

Reply:
Young Composer: "Herr Mozart, I am thinking of writing a symphony. How should I get started?"
Mozart: "A symphony is a very complex musical form and you are still young. Perhaps you should start with something simpler, like a concerto."
Young Composer: "But Herr Mozart, you were writing symphonies when you were 8 years old."
Mozart: "Yes, but I never asked anyone how."

The Predator Effect: Understanding the Past, Present and Future of Deceptive Academic Journals
by Simon Linacre
Just completed my 6th term, 2 years and 2 cohorts of students with whom I engaged in ungrading with. This last term did not go as well as I had wanted it to. It was a reminder that to me at least, there is not "achieving" ungrading. There is a need for regular reflection, conversation with students, and refinement of practices and structures.
One central and ongoing tension is the balance between creating structures and scaffolds, and having open and amorphous tasks that provide students with more agency, but also may seem more opaque. Balancing and rebalancing this has been an ongoing exercise that feels a bit like a swinging pendulum.
For all my new financial services analytics students, this episode is a fantastic window into data science in your world. It is so good. @Cmastication is a fascinating human being with gift for storytelling. Make sure you LISTEN!

Mastodon and the Fediverse are at their best when you are following lots of people, not only because you see their posts, but because you also see the posts they share. Seeing lots of shares makes it much easier to discover stuff.

Following people is how discovery works on here. There's no computer algorithm pushing stuff to you, instead there are millions of human beings manually sharing stuff they find interesting.
