I've been doing an experiment for a while, where I have been trying to be mindful of my use of words like people, them, etc.
"People that deny and refuse to process their trauma (by maintaining ignorance of it) tend to accept the trauma they experienced as normal."
versus
"Those of us that deny and refuse to process our trauma (by maintaining ignorance of it) tend to accept the trauma we experienced as normal."
It's subtle, but when writing it the second way, it feels less divisive, to me.
Stuck Follow requests (Mastodon meta)
There is a #glitch of some sort where #follows can get stuck in the "follow request" state, even for accounts that don't normally require follows to be approved.
When this happens, pressing "Cancel Follow Request" and then immediately pressing "Follow" on their profile will get you immediately following them.
I don't know a way to tell these from accounts that really do require that requests be approved, and just haven't approved mine; so I hope that on the rare occasion that I do press Cancel and then immediately Follow on one of those, it doesn't annoy them...
@samplereality Oh, that's an excellent point, but there's an easier method without waiting weeks for all those API calls (for big accounts) to process. The old account name switcheroo:
1) rename twitter/@myaccount to @myaccount_old
2) immediately create a new account using "@myaccount." (no waiting period on doing this.)
3) Delete @myaccount_old
On a technical note, Twitter makes it *extremely* difficult to batch delete more than your most recent 3200 tweets. Once you've deleted the most recent 3200, you can't go back farther. Those deleted 3200 tweets still "count" as your most recent 3200 posts, even after they're gone. The only reliable solution I've found is this node.js script, which uses Twitter's v2 API and handles the rate limiting correctly (i.e. you can't delete more than 50 tweets every 15 minutes).
Appropriately enough I ran the script on the same low-powered single-board computer that powers my bots. Took about 10 days to delete the roughly 40,000 tweets on each bot account. Code: https://github.com/wayne530/twitter-wipe
Alexandra Kollontai is such a cool historical figure. She laid out a historical materialist analysis of love (i.e. tying different modes of economic production to different relationship structures/institutions). And argued that love under socialism would be polyamorous because people don't own their partners, and they have different needs that may require multiple relationships to be met.
Her work Make Way for Winged Eros came out in 1923!
