Gonna be vulnerable here and say that being the mom and the breadwinner often feels lonely and underappreciated, but I came home and my kids had left this note for me 😭😭😭

I'm thinking about getting a "new" used car. Unfortunately, tests of driver assistance / "self driving" systems don't seem to be any better than they were three years ago when I wrote danluu.com/car-safety/.

No one's doing anything resembling what a programmer would consider serious benchmarking and it doesn't look like anyone is going to either even though driver assistance / ADAS systems are becoming a more important part of safety over time.

If you know this already apologies for being "the reply girl" but there is a huge tendency to misidentify brown recluse spiders.

If you are even a little uncertain check out this video.

Cable news plays an agenda-setting role wildly out of scale with its viewership. There are lots of reasons for this, but I really think younger political folk in particular should start thinking about how to change it. The whole system has become grossly insular & out of touch.

The Furby source code is public and heavily commented. For example, it turns the microphone off when the motors are running.

Oof! 😥
“After inadvertently finding that InfoSys leaked an AWS key on PyPi I wanted to know how many other live AWS keys may be present on Python package index. After scanning every release published to PyPi I found 57 valid access keys from organisations like:

Amazon themselves 😅
Intel
Stanford, Portland and Louisiana University
The Australian Government
General Atomics fusion department
Terradata
Delta Lake
And Top Glove, the worlds largest glove manufacturer 🧤”

"In each step of the way, to ensure a certain smoothness in the migration to a new architecture, Apple has provided some sort of emulation or transitional technology, allowing software from a previous era to run unmodified in the next, or at least to be easily recompiled.

This has always happened, and will happen again."

People write about TikTok's "for you" recommendations as "eerily good", "mind reading", "spooky" -- and it does seem considerably better than its social-media rivals

But odds are there's nothing remarkable about the algorithm itself

Recommender systems are pretty mature -- it's unlikely (though not impossible) Bytedance found some new concept nobody else knows

No, the secret ingredient is more likely ...

... the UI:

Almost 25 years ago, amidst much drama in the community over a name-squatter, I got schemers.org to create a community resource site for the Scheme programming language.

Over the past decade I've tended it less and less, down to basically zero except on demand.

Today I will finally transfer it to active Schemers. But I'll always be one at heart. To me, it is still a genius act of design.

Fly high again, little site!

Do you know why aardvarks never get sick? It's because they are so full of anty bodies.

#AIArt controversy

I find myself having slightly heated discussions, simultaneously, with both "AI art is theft!" people, and "AI art is not a problem" people.

(The easy thought here would be "I must have it about right, then", but over the decades I've become less fond of that conclusion.)

For completeness, here's the current "AI Art is theft" video under discussion (it's imho not bad, at least as it talks about copyright issues):

and the "AI Art is no problem" one (under which I posted a long critical reply):

**Arctic spill storm factory now starting in Atlantic** The bbc and other media keep insisting all this is just a lazy atmospheric river. Those are the pure ocean plumes without cold. They can drift forever, but when they hit mountains, they can produce rain. That's why the plumes are called 'precipitable water'.
But what we have in the Pacific are huge storms, near hurricanes, with a full feed of hot and cold. Now we are getting those hitting Europe. The storm drags in the cold feed, so the NW side is a blizzard.

"All mammals have platelets, which are necessary for survival because they arrest bleeding (haemostasis). No other order has platelets, even though the problem of bleeding exists. A solution to the enigma of why only mammals have platelets was recently proposed, linking the origin of the platelet in an egg-laying animal, which initially did not have platelets, to the evolution of the eutherian (haemochorial) placenta found in all mammals apart from monotremes and marsupials"
