An advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rustin was considered by some as controversial due to his past membership with Communist Party & the fact the PA native was gay.

King insisted Rustin’s background & expertise were invaluable, yet Rustin was resigned to working behind the scenes because of his sexual orientation.
