I bet you’ve heard of Galileo & Hubble, but what about Henrietta Swan Leavitt?

Leavitt changed astronomy. She figured out new ways to measure a star’s distance from Earth & her work helped determine the universe is expanding.

Her boss, Edward Pickering, published her findings UNDER HIS NAME. Later, Shapley used her findings to determine distances around the Milky Way w/o credit.

Leavitt’s work is still used today. So next time you hear about famous men in #science share her remarkable story.

A sad and persuasive and negative review.

Remember all the speculative BS from the #COVID19 deniers that suggested pulling kids into online learning was adding to teen suicides. That was absolutely wrong. In fact, school attendance RAISES teen suicide rates.

“Returning from online to in-person schooling was associated with a 12-to-18 percent increase in teen suicides.”

I'm not advocating against in-person education, but
1) the COVID deniers were wrong AGAIN, and
2) We need to make education safer for kids.

Reason 579 why I love #Italy: the young guy carrying a big basket of lemons who, when we stopped to let him cross the street, shoved two fresh-picked lemons into our car as a thank you. Spontaneous generosity. It never gets old. In Pantelleria, April 2015. #TravelPhoto

Is there a way I can set up a direct hotline with my elderly mom between my house and her apartment that:

1) is secure
2) no one else can call
3) does not require batteries/charging
4) is immobile and can’t be lost

She has an Internet connection and a cell phone already but often forgets to charge it. Another cell or landline opens her up to 2x predatory junk aimed at seniors

I am thinking like the red Batphone in Batman ‘66

I really like how this one turned out. #HorizonForbiddenWest

@mrmrnelson @inoneear #lego everyone is awesome

Sometimes to keep myself amused while teaching, I'll nonchalantly work Star Trek quotes into my lectures. Last week, I was teaching a class on social boundary setting, and heuristics to use to decide what to do if someone has crossed your boundaries.

"...and you might realize: the line must be drawn *here.* This far, no farther."

If you're a doctor and

- don't take your patients seriously because they're young, have mental health issues, are LGBTIA+ and/or BIPOC

- don't listen to them and think you know more than them about changes in their own bodies

- minimize their pain or pretend they're exaggerating

Then you're a really bad one and MUST do something about that.

Improve, learn, get rid of any doctor/patient hierarchy.
Get another job if you don't intend to heal people and treat them with respect and humanity.

Head’s up. The crypto world is trying really hard to pivot decentralized social media.

It’s important for everyone to know that the Fediverse has NOTHING to do with cryptocurrency, or NFTs, or whatever Ponzi scheme the “coin” hucksters have been trying to peddle.

Whenever something gets trendy, that’s when the bottom feeders arrive.

Idaho's wolf management plan? Kill 2/3 of all the wolves in the state, give ranchers carte blanche, and allowing sadistic hunters to kill wolves in a variety of cruel ways. In sum: bringing them as close to the edge of extinction as they can get away with. #USFWS needs to #ProtectWolves under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct #ASAP!

"We need to breathe clean air indoors" shouldn't be a fringe position.

"I'm trying hard to avoid repeated infection from the brain damaging virus" shouldn't be the view of a radical minority.

I’m hiring! This is a good fit for someone looking for some research experience in between undergrad and med school or grad school. The research is on sexual harassment in biomedical research. Please share with folks who might be interested!

"...immediate concerns were soon joined by a broader set of worries: that the entire rail industry presented a systematic danger, and the Ohio derailment was a symptom of a much deeper pathology that endangered anyone who lives near one of the rail corridors that crisscross America."

Aside from the fact that — unlike Pence and Biden — Trump resisted returning classified documents, it's important to remember just the sheer number of documents Trump had. https://www.usatoday.com/story/graphics/2023/02/10/pence-fbi-search-classified-documents/11229384002/
