A #Chicago cop got out of 44 tickets by saying over and over that his girlfriend stole his car.

And it worked.

All 44 times, his tickets were dismissed.

At hearings, Jeffrey Kriv often provided what he said were legitimate #police incident reports as evidence of the car thefts. He explained that he got the reports at police HQ.

Kriv did not let on that he, himself, was a cop.

On June 2, 1863, 160 years ago today, Harriet Tubman commanded 300 Black soldiers in the audacious Raid on Combahee Ferry. With the Union Army backing , The General, as she was called, liberated 800 people, destroyed supplies, and struck a blow against the Confederacy. She became the FIRST woman in U.S. history to plan and execute an armed expedition, inspiring joy and freedom among over 800 enslaved people.

For Pride Month, I'd like to mention #Babylon5. The show ran from 1993 to 1998, and made a point of *not* making a point of gay relationships. Susan Ivanova (serving military officer) had a lesbian affair with Talia Winters, and no other character even blinked.

Later on two straight men on a secret mission found themselves using "newlyweds" as a cover story, because two men on their honeymoon would fit right in.

The message was clear: in the future being gay is 100% unremarkable. In the 90s!

So I got one of these wee doodads. Little emulation handheld. Looks like an old Game Boy, about that size and looking like that aesthetic, but with four main buttons instead of two, plus a pair of analogue sticks.

Analog? Never been clear on whether that's an American/British English thing or whether one is the electrical sense and the other is the kinda metaphorical comparative sense, IDK.

We have a houseguest, and she turns out to be Right Wing. She's my wife's friend, but I could not stay silent. She had started in with J about the "Border Crisis" and J shut that right down, to her credit, but I felt it wasn't enough.

I told our guest about a fascinating book I was reading, that it was good, but traumatic. It was about the Mezote Massacre in El Salvador, and how soldiers trained by the C.I.A. to prevent leftist incursion, were told to frighten the villagers, and instead, tortured and murdered 800 to 1000 people.

Then I left the room.

She hasn't said anything along those lines since.

I think we have to speak up, even when it's uncomfortable or might be seen as "impolite."

I remember when they were clearly moving towards casting a female Doctor. I was dead against it. I didn't want a female Doctor and didn't see why we couldn't just have a strong female Timelord in the TARDIS instead as a companion or ally.

But then a whole parade of misogynists and juvenile fan boys showed up to freak out about the idea and I changed my mind about it. Because nothing helps to crystallise whether your opinion is worth anything than seeing who agrees with you.

I think this is generally good advice. If you express an opinion on something, look for who agrees with you. If it's some of the worst people alive, your opinion is wrong.
