"It ain't about the going, it's how you go."

I did not realize how much being hyper-obsessed with X-Men comics during my teens and 20s would prepare me for being a disabled queer during the rise of authoritarian eugenicist rule.

But, I'm not kidding, it really has helped.

What did the X-Men do when the U.S. government was out to arrest, kill, and/or medically experiment on them to change who they fundamentally are?

Network with other mutants. Commit to living life fully. Resist unto death.

Let's hope it’s DeSantis and this sheriff holds him responsible for this and indicts him. It would be hilarious if members of the right wing had to choose between two indicted criminals when they vote for President.

Astrud Gilberto has died. One of the musical styles that defined my generation was bossa nova. The most famous song in that style is The Girl from Ipanema. The song was written by Joao Gilberto, who is considered the father of bossa nova. Astrud was his wife.

The Girl from Ipanema is sung by Astrud, a girl who is not a professional singer. How did this happen? On the day the song was recorded, the intended singer didn't show up and Joao asked Astrud to have a go at it. The result is epic because the song benefits enormously from her innocent, ordinary, non-flashy singing.

@help I set up a page for a category to get my long form posts all together. I made the category, set up the filter and ran it. The posts get tagged with the category, but they don't show on the page. But, a short post with no title tagged with the category does show up.. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I think I understand the baffling disconnect between what AI doom bros see in the tech and what I see. Take them at their word: what if AI could “reprogram itself to be smarter” singularity happens (I don’t find this plausible, but for now, play along) These guys think simply being “the smartest” is a kind of power. In my experience that’s not how intelligence interacts with power at all! They believe they have power because they are “smart.” So fear something “smarter” would have more power.

@futurebird Until it has robot hands it's route to action in the world is indeed "manipulate people into doing it"

But that is also true for the successful powerful humans of course. The boss don't don't write their own software or engineer their own viruses or make their own nukes. They have their staff do it.

"“Mycorrhizal fungi” — named for the combined Latin words for “fungus” and “root” — have provided plants with mineral nutrients like #phosphorous in exchange for plant-manufactured sugars.

Since those plants are making that sugar out of #CarbonDioxide from the air, that means that the fungi are in effect a growing subterranean “carbon bank.”

Field’s team found that fungi pulled down 36 percent of global #FossilFuel #emissions,."
