This is an unfortunately-titled but important post about the problems with Open Source and how the privatisation of the commons has bitten us, and bitten us, and bitten us. I was there at the time, and I just want to say: I was wrong. Open Source doesn't do what Free Software is supposed to, and the way it's been co-opted by business is serving us very poorly at this point.

I'm not going to defend RMS. But Copyleft was a good idea, and we ignored it to our detriment.

#Juneteenth was the start of a long arc of history for the 182,566 enslaved African Americans in Texas who were told they had finally won their freedom.

One of them was Joshua Houston.

He had long served as the enslaved servant of Gen. Sam Houston, the most well-known military and political leader in Texas.

At 12 AM, unrestrained joy erupted—3.5 million enslaved souls were “thenceforward, and forever free!" Union soldiers rushed to spread news, but not all gained freedom. It took 2.5 years—June 19, 1865—JUNETEENTH—-for over 250,000 black Americans still held in bondage in TX to taste freedom.
