There was a discussion about computer at work yesterday, and I was remembering that there was a "forum" (i.e. newsgroup) in back in the day that was similarly about computer nostalgia, and ran for a long time.

It was named for an issue of BYTE Magazine that featured various nostalgic things, and the notable thing is that the forum was called BYTE8406 FORUM.

Which is to say, that nostalgia discussion is now itself very much nostalgia, because it happened nearly FORTY years ago now... O.o

Twitter, Musk

WaPo's reporting on Twitter paying out large sums to right wing influencers makes one thing clear to me: I need to use that site as little as possible. Because now just interacting with posts I don't like could be money in the pockets of fascists.

#introduction
Hi I'm Pierre, changed from Lego geek to computer geek at 11 when I touched a computer; they weren't that common in '80.
Studied computing at uni, became software #developer. Worked in several #startups, but not only.
Switched main OS to #linux in 1996. From time to time I contribute to #freesoftware projects, last to date being #DaggerfallUnity.
I enjoy #jazz #music (sometimes play #drums, but I need to replace my aging kit now), or #photography #nature.

“American brain worms” is a thing we talk about regularly among my friends and family here in Iceland. It’s become really noticable that people who go to study in the US come back with extremely strange ideas. Noticably anti-union, libertarian (by Icelandic standards), pro-violence in all sorts of context, etc (Iceland is a broadly pacifist country with no army). You don’t see the same massive indoctrination in people who go and study in other countries.

One of my coworkers from the UK was recently describing the notion of overcomplicating software architecture.

He used a phrase I had never encountered before…

For the past week, I have been chuckling to myself at random moments throughout the day.

Help me Mastodon you're my only hope! I saw an ad for an SF novel about a worker's revolt in space. Author's first name is Jo. Unfortunately I accidentally paged up to the top of my feed and didn't see the surname. I think it's slated for a fall release.

Are you familiar with the Land Institute? Anyways this photo comparison of the roots of wheat and Kernza can really drive home how much more carbon sequestration is possible with perennial cropping systems I think.

Something I'm working on is a book with my thoughts on "practical socialist housing" for turning the McMansions that popped up all over California in the last 30 years (and often now used for STRs) into socialist housing.

Things like phone and coaxial and network wiring, etc.
