Born 122 years ago this week, Louis Armstrong's charisma & warmth captivated audiences globally. But, by the 1950s and 1960s, many of his Black Americans perceived him as outdated, out of touch with civil rights, and hesitant to voice his opinions—labeling him an "Uncle Tom." This deeply wounded Armstrong. But he was a far more complex & nuanced man than they knew.

I see writers are finding fake books attributed to them for sale on Amazon - again. If this happens to you and you're a member of The Society of Authors or your local equivalent, let them know at once. Writers' organisations can get through to key Amazon people direct and the more evidence they have of a problem, the more likely they'll get it resolved.

Oh, this was very cool. A room with just a suspended cube of cutwork metal or wood, illuminated in the center. It casts shadows to all the walls and ceiling and you feel totally immersed in it.

A broken clock fixed by taping a working clock over it is a metaphor for every codebase you’ll encounter in your professional career as a software developer.

Wow, so....hi everyone!

I guess I should do a formal #introduction now.

I'm a law professor at Suffolk Law School in Boston, where I teach Civ Pro, Patents & Design Law.

When I'm not teaching, I'm usually thinking, reading, or writing about design patents.

Outside of work, I love reading (especially fantasy & historical fiction), watching Netflix & exploring my new city.

Latest news about Star Trek: Prodigy:

Paramount has commissioned completion of a 20 episode Season 2, which is likely to air on a different streaming service than Paramount+, set on a new Lamarr-class USS Voyager-A, a post-Dominion War return to larger science vessels after the heavy turn to battle-readiness for the Federation.

Apparently the #SaveStarTrekProdigy hashtag on social media and general response to Prodigy's removal and cancellation convinced the execs.

The Institute for Replication is looking for researchers interested in replicating economic and political science articles. A list of studies of eligible studies is available here : docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d Please contact instituteforreplication@gmail.com for more detail and indicate which study you would like to replicate. "Attention at Croton Harmon, the 7:22 train to Grand Central Station is estimated to arrive at ... 7:22. Repeat: the 7:22..."

These announcements are slightly baffling to me. They don't make them for every single train. Is it to warn us that it's not going to linger for very long, since it's arriving when it's scheduled to leave? Or something?

AI doomerism has some similarity to Abrahamic God worship: AI is a vengeful God, who will doom all humans with catastrophe if the instructions of the high priests are not followed. Our original sin is recklessly allowing AI to get this far, and our salvation is to follow the instructions of the priests and their written proscriptions to stop AI, before it smites all of humanity with robot locusts or some such.

The priesthood must carefully manage or "worship" AI in secret chambers only for the chosen few). AI, if it is to exist at all, must be carefully studied or placated by the priesthood, and most importantly the priesthood must be entrusted to keep it secure with the urgency of the eternal fate of humanity.

I guess today is as good a day as any to wake up to an email saying that I'm banned from #Airbnb without any explanation whatsoever? And right after I was scammed on their platform & they had to refund me money.

I supposedly didn't follow their terms of service. How? Who knows?

Another one to add to the #airbnbwhileblack diaries smh.

Intros?

I have been doing :androidHead: since 2015 when I was doing Android once a month with some awesome people in the local Women Who Code group. After being a stay at home mom for almost ten years,

I got my first Android developer job four months before the pandemic and was super excited about leaving home to go to work. 😆 😭

I learned a lot about Kotlin, Mockito, and Dagger while working from home.

Now I am learning Jetpack Compose and coroutines.

We live in New England, so weather is a factor: the summer heat is gross, but he can go fast enough to cool himself while biking. Speed is actually an accessibility concern!

I can zip across town, bypassing traffic. And that's without any more infrastructure than bike lanes and sharrows on wide roads. With more pervasive and separate bike infrastructure (or hell, replace roads), it'd be even better.

I was able to pop into the next city with a toolkit for bike repair today. I didn't need a car or van to do mobile repairs. If I had a bakfiet, I could deliver packages about as effectively as a delivery van, I bet. And way more flexible with the parking. I'd not block the bike lane at every stop.

We've got a lot of work to do to improve things. I live in a progressive city that has made people angry installing as much bike infrastructure as they have. An e-bike rebate program would quell so much of the dissent.

Our laws in MA are kinda batshit. (I think technically I need a driver's license? The law is inscrutable and maybe self-contradictory if I'm even half understanding it.)

US e-bike classifications are mostly sensible, but being speed based instead of power based, mean that bikes need to be more complex than they could be.

Motors are more expensive than they should be too, especially low power ones. But I have hope that scale fixes some of that. There's already several chinese motor manufacturers springing up, in addition to the few that have been around a while. (Bafang, Tong Sheng, now Wuxi Truckrun seems to be trying to make inroads.)

We could clear some legal hurdles. We could normalize some of the insurance concerns that bike shops have with working on e-bikes. We really could juggle some liability stuff to make a lot of this better.

Potholes are still a big concern for bikes. They go from ‘damaging' to 'quite dangerous'.

Bike lanes painted where roads are torn up to service underlying infrastructure is a problem. So many slippery utility covers, and attendant pavement warts. I don't really love truly separate bike infrastructure, since it's often built kind of isolating from places you want to go. But it's still a solid midpoint from where we are to where we need to be.

🌤️ On #Fediverse #Intelligibility

Towards a more purposeful Mastodon experience?

I have not yet installed Steampipe, yet. I am developing a #fediverse strategy. All I know is the #Mastodon UI is less informative than I desire.

1. Mapping the wider fediverse
2. Protocols, APIs, and conventions
3. News in the fediverse
4. Mapping people and tags in Mastodon
5. Visualizing Mastodon server moderation
6. Mastodon timelines for teams
7. The Mastodon plugin is now available on the Steampipe Hub
