Among the advisors to the #ABA #AI task force is Michael Chertoff -- co-author of the PATRIOT Act. I think this is going to work out beautifully:

"The task force aims to assess how AI will affect the practice of law, probe ethical questions, and focus on issues like risk management, AI governance, and AI in legal education.

...

The average age among the team is about 70, they’re all lawyers, and none of them have any evident technical expertise.”

Are you in northern California and looking for a new friend? We've been fostering kittens rescued from a nearby colony and have 4 more that need homes (we've rehomed 10 so far this summer). All of them make wonderful pets and are used to kids, dogs, and other cats.

The rescues are all full and we don't have a way to find homes for these without just surrendering them to the SPCA. We've tapped our network of friends and family and hope Mastodon can help.

"Three days after the article was published, someone asked Yudkowsky on social media: “How many people are allowed to die to prevent AGI?” His response was: “There should be enough survivors on Earth in close contact to form a viable reproductive population, with room to spare, and they should have a sustainable food supply. So long as that’s true, there’s still a chance of reaching the stars someday.”"

Remember that these are the bozos policy makers are talking to.

This week at the conference I will present our research into Online Collaborative Story Writing systems.

We studied how people collaborate to write shared narratives, considering works since 2012. Among others, we review works by @andresmh @Riedl @msbernst

We put all this in perspective adapting Lowry's 2004 Taxonomy of Collaborative Writing to online authoring of narrative.

Our review shows how focus is on rudimentary activities like writing and revising. Yet, other important activities and roles such as outlining, leadership, facilitation, etc. remain left out. This is probably due to these tasks commonly remaining implicit in individual authoring. Yet, arguably these are what makes good narratives stand out.

'Nobody would dare to boil down Ursula Le Guin’s marvelous writing—all that fantasy, all that science fiction, poetry, essays, translations—into one idea. But in a pinch I’d pick two sentences from her 2014 National Book Award speech: “Capitalism[’s] power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings.”

Best-selling car models vary widely across different regions of the world. In this toot, I will compare the sizes of the following areas: ASEAN, Latin America, Europe, North America, and the world overall.

ASEAN is a regional grouping of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. The best-selling car model in ASEAN in 2021 was the Toyota Hilux. The second best-selling car model was the Isuzu D-Max, another pickup truck. So the ASEAN region loves pickups!

Latin America is a region that includes Mexico, Central America and South America. The best-selling car model in Latin America in 2021 was also the Toyota Hilux. Another pickup-loving part of the world.

Europe is a continent that consists of 44 countries. The best-selling car model in Europe in 2023 was the Tesla Model Y.

North America is a continent that includes Canada, the United States and Mexico. The best-selling car model in North America in 2022 was the Ford F-Series,.

Africa again favours pickups and again the HiLux is the best-selling car.

The world is a planet that has about 200 countries and territories. The best-selling car model in the world in 2022 was the Toyota Corolla, a compact car.

Why is the world average a small car but the most popular in terms of single models almost always a pickup? Because second, third, and fourth places do tend to be dominated by popular small cars around the world.

'The pigment cells of the sea urchin were also found to be similar to immune and neural cell types in the sea star. Based on the genes shared between them, Meyer et al. propose that pigment cells have a dual role (immune and neural) in sea urchin larvae, while these functions are exerted by two separate cell types in sea stars (Figure 1B).'

“The survival rate in the United States, where around 22 percent of patients die every year, is the lowest in the industrialized world,” says Leonard Stern. “The mortality in Japan is only 5 to 6 percent per year, and in Western Europe it’s in the range of 9 to 12 percent per year. So what is the difference? Well, for a start, most dialyzing in the United States is done for profit, and the for-profit survival is always less than the not-for-profit.”

I recently learned about Normalcy Bias, and I think it's important that everyone understands what this is.

Normalcy bias is a tendency to underestimate the likelihood or impact of a negative event. Around 80% of people show normalcy bias in crisis situations.

This means normalcy bias can be incredibly dangerous and, therefore, important to understand. In my opinion, the (ongoing) pandemic is a good example of normalcy bias in action.

"Not only do computers reinforce exiting concentrations of power, existing social hierarchies, but that they also constrict our understanding of what it means to be a human. […] Computers encourage us to think of ourselves as computers."

The latest Tech Won't Save Us episode goes into the history of "AI" criticism and back to the creator of the famous ELIZA chatbot that revealed how easily humans get tricked into believing there's a person when there really isn't, or re-shape their own self-image to better fit a machine, and explores the reactionary impulse that's embedded in a lot of computing.
