Why is one telescope not enough to observe black holes?

Remember the parable of the blind men & the elephant? If we look at a #BlackHole with one telescope, we are one of the blind men, touching just a part of the giant beast.

To understand black holes we need to look in X-rays to see matter falling into them[1], in radio to resolve their shadow[2], in optical to see their progenitors explode[3], in gravitational waves to see them merging[4], etc.[5]

In #JapaneseFolklore 'The Boy Who Drew Cats' is a tale about a boy who was compelled to draw #cats everywhere. He initially got into trouble but his hobby paid off because one day the cats he drew came to life and saved him from a giant rat goblin. This story speaks of the compulsive nature of creating, the benefits of practicing & perfecting your craft, and ultimately letting your art save you. Anecdote about David Bowie’s trick for going incognito on public transport by carrying a Greek newspaper as a prop, immediately causing anyone who recognise him to dismiss him as some Greek guy who looks like him.

Bowie trained as a mime before taking up a music career, which may have informed his thinking in such areas.

The autumn pic on my old Pixelfed was replaced by this photo of a #glasswing #heliconius #butterfly I uploaded it the day before yesterday and yesterday it jumped up to nr 5 with 68 favs.

Highlights include JJ figuring out riding his bike on New Year’s Day and KT just being her sweet little self. Also: Riggs.

Isolated abandoned schoolhouse on the High Plains of northern Montana. A large schoolhouse like this would have been built right in the heart of a large community. There are no houses left round here. Just empty frozen grasslands.

You Can't Hide Beautiful. A painting from my Labor of Love Series that I started over 15 years ago. I've always been drawn to mosaics and circles and how everything is interconnected. Like little "cells". Kind of like us. :)

It took me a while to spot it!

The Army Corp of Engineers cat calendar is the only calendar that I’m interested in for 2023. https://usace.contentdm.oclc.org/utils/getfile/collection/p16021coll11/id/5869

Salvage Yard Kitty Cat - I captured this cat at a workshop I took at a South Jersey salvage yard. She showed herself for just a momen and then disappeared into the yard. I really loved this shot of her on the old car.

Deep in space they rely on one character to keep the peace, Cosmic Enforcer Cat. His fierce looks are matched only by the electric energy running throughout his entire being, supplying the power required to maintain order.
