An abolitionist designed the statue. A group of abolitionists paid for the statue. There's a plaque at the feet telling everyone what it's for. They named it the Statue of Liberty. It's arguably the largest anti-racism monument in the US, and the most recognizable anti-racism monument in the world...
Except people don't even know it's an anti-racism monument. They think it celebrates the huge influx of white immigrants from Europe that came to the US.

Tinted, double-hinged spectacles, c.1790. Many opticians believed green or blue glass was easier on the eyes and would reduce glare; while clear glass was too soft and would distort images.
This extraordinary example is from the Wellcome Collection in London.

Maryam Mirzakhani was the first woman & Iranian to earn the Fields Medal in mathematics for her brilliant work in hyperbolic geometry.
Her achievements influenced quantum field theory, engineering & material science & may have applications related to how the universe began.
Mirzakhani was an immigrant & became a Stanford professor. She passed away at just 40 in 2017. In her words:
“The beauty of mathematics only shows itself to more patient followers.”

when we had the exit stamp on the mauritanian side of the river 'senegal', we pushed the bikes over the bridge to get the entry stamp for #senegal 🥳
already at the border a completely different country welcomed us. the people seemed very happy to us and it was colorful everywhere.
we realised that since morocco we have seen very few women and even fewer unveiled women.
after we had a delicious lunch on the street, refilled our foodbags we reached the zebra bar just before sunset. 🌅 🤩 🍻
Forgotten women of paleontology: Alice Wilson, Canada's first female geologist.
When she began to work at the Geological Survey of Canada, the director stated: Physically and sexually Miss Wilson is not fitted for any but the lightest sort of field work, and only in settled districts. An undesirable condition would be created by attempting to fit her for field work.”

Signs you have carpenter ants:
* keep finding tiny tools
* city sends a very tiny permit to affix to baseboard
* “when you try to move a book” you are told to “keep this entrance clear,ma’am” because of the “cement delivery coming later”
* Your dish rack is dismantled “because it’ll be cheaper to rebuild from scratch”
* no room on the dresser due to like 85 tiny pickups illegally parked there
* husband keeps hearing high pitched wolf whistles when exiting shower
GoodMorning,
It's zero this morning in #Vermont. True winter is here, with -20 by Saturday.
The cold slams your nostrils, numbs your hands as you get wood from the shed, stiffens your back as you make it back to the house.
Jeez-um, waking up in the winter in Vermont is like wrestling a team of oxen to do what they don't want to do.
The #apex, though, is sitting in a comfy chair in front of a roaring wood stove sipping a hot cup of coffee.
My beloved French teacher who taught me for 5 years in middle and high school (who I kept in touch with!) retired in her late 50s a year or two ago. One of the best teachers I’ve ever had, and one of the most committed educators I know- it was a huge surprise that she retired early.
But she is Black, she teaches about French colonialism in her classes, & she lives in Texas.
I honestly can’t blame her for getting out of the nightmare that is teaching in the US…too many guns, not enough books.
Food-fight between a mature and an immature Bald Eagle.
The Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons congregate at Seabeck, WA during low tide to feast on Midshipman fish that come to the oyster beds to breed.

Island depopulation: The battle on Bute https://theferret.scot/island-depopulation-scotland-the-battle-on-bute/
Imagine if every city, county, state, province, and national government on Earth would make a serious and urgent effort to achieve the outcome shown here.
We're very, very far away from that today — especially in the US — but it's possible!
Happy #BlackHistoryMonth !
You know the drill by now. I don't like talking about Black history. Americans know Black history. I want to talk about white American history. In other words, racism, and the erasure of both positive achievements of, and injustices suffered by, non-white people. That's what people don't know.
Try this: Ask your white US friends what the statue of liberty celebrates.
Now ask your Black friends. Or French folk of any color.
