"With time the old are retired and stashed away, Even though she surely was a beauty in her day
But beauty fades when the road's too long, When tires on the road no longer can sing their song"

Pseudomorph
A pseudomorph (false form) results from a gradual substitution process in which the original material (mineral or other) is replaced by a (different) mineral but retains the original appearance. Petrified wood is a familiar example, but pseudomorphs can be quite exotic, rare, and beautiful.
See some fantastic pseudomorphs from mindat.org, “the world’s leading authority on minerals and their localities, deposits, and mines worldwide.” https://www.mindat.org/mesg-392615.html
Image below is from Geology In: https://www.geologyin.com/2018/04/what-is-pseudomorph-mineral.html
Bonus: We are lucky to have one of the world’s leading mineral authorities on Mastodon: @jolyonralph

An #introduction...
I'm Jonathan Blackmore, an artist & linocut printmaker. I live in the South West of England.
My prints are now mostly based on nature, landscapes, & fossils. I made quite a few prints of medieval architecture when I lived in Wells, Somerset.
I tend to work very slowly, & like to make prints by hand. I don't get on well with machinery, so I work without a press.
I'll share some of my work here in the coming weeks.
Yosemite Chapel In The Snow
This shot was captured during a break in a winter snow storm in Yosemite Valley. It had snowed most of the night and was still snowing when I awoke.
The Chapel is the oldest building in Yosemite Valley being built in 1879. It's original location was the "Lower Valley" but was moved to it's current location in 1901. Researching mines in northern Spain I came across this curious object. It's a canary cage designed to keep the canary alive in the event of a gas leak. If a miner saw the canary laying at the bottom of the cage it was time to abandon everything and leave the mine, but not without first closing the latched glass door and opening the valve of the oxygen bottle to save the bird. A miner would do that on their way out and take the bird with them. It's a signifier of the miner's legendary sense of solidarity, no lives lost to the mine on a miners watch. A solidarity that was also crucial in the fight for workers rights, creating safer and more humane working conditions, achievements of unionization and solidarity that some of us still enjoy today.
Welcome to #SciFiJanuary. let’s start the month off with where it all began. A Trip to the Moon ( 1902 France) This trippy film was the first sci-fi film and it is quite a treat. Based on two Jules Verne stories it features some ground breaking special effects and storytelling. Producer/Director Georges Milies was an illusionists IRL. His parents were rich and funded his projects to keep him busy including this one. Yay for rich parents. Audiences loved it all over the world and it was copied a lot (as in the style). In some places the film ran non-stop for months. Over a hundred and twenty years later it is considered one of the most influential films ever made. Millie’s made a colorized version. Each frame was hand painted. That was lost but was rediscovered and restored recently. The film is wildly available cuz the copyright ran out. You can find it on YouTube including the color version. When you watch it go for the 9 minute version. That is the native 24fps version. Anything lower is too slow for our brain. Anything higher has been altered. #SciFi #Sci-Fi #ScienceFiction #Film #FilmFan #Movie #Movies #Cinema

Dominique Jean Larrey, a French surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars, created "flying ambulances" (below) to provide rapid transport of the wounded. He treated men according to the gravity of their injuries regardless of rank or nationality - a novel concept in the 19th century.
