In 2018, England's football team made it to the World Cup seminfinal.

The entire country chose to stay at home or flock to pubs to watch the match.

Me? I went to see Burt Bacharach live in Oxford. He came on stage wearing an England football shirt.

One of a kind.

RIP Burt.

I always enjoy coming across these painted stones in the grounds of Gartnavel Hospital in the west end of Glasgow. They help brighten up my day, so thanks to whoever makes them.

today is one of those days where we ask ourself: what are we doing here?

after pedaling through villages where thousands of kids are yelling:
"toubab, argent! argent!
toubab, donnez mois ton velo!"

sometimes followed by throwing sticks and stones.
where the horrible traffic and sandy roads suck all energy out of your body.
In a country where you pay €10 to stay on a very rundown campground without electricity and an ugly toilet...

will it get better or worse?
how can we refill our energy?

San Francisco's Market Street subway...

Runs off of floppy disks.

And we're not talking those swanky high tech 3.5 inch floppy disks! No no....

Five.

And a quarter inch.

Floppy.

Disks.

Hey so, I’m not a lawyer, but I think this important enough to toot.

If you’re like me and you’re not legally married, and you don’t have much blood family or you’re estranged or your family is found, have a will, and put specific funeral and burial arrangements in it. Even if you’re 30. Even if your partner or found family has complete legal and medical power of attorney already. Be explicit in legally binding writing.

In my state and probably others, POA is basically useless upon death. Unless there is an immediate blood relative there, the state takes over a bunch of funeral decisions and power of attorney means about diddly squat. Just please, do it.

I enter the Library of Books You Read As A Child.
"Do you have... er. It was green, and there was a girl and a dog, and..."
The librarian nods.
"Of course. Which version do you want?"
"Version?"
"The one you read, with all flaws you didn't notice, or the one you remember loving?"

One of the great orphaned gable end murals around High Street painted by Smug. It was originally unnamed, but as with many things in Glasgow, it was soon given one by the city's residents, and it's now known as St Mungo.

For today's #ThickTrunkTuesday, I have a very special tree.

This is an ancient hornbeam tree that is about 700 yrs old.

It looks like two trees, but it's actually a single tree that has begun to compartmentalise in the latter part of its life. I explain more about this below.

I'd love to go back to shoot this again in the fog. Here's hoping things align the next time I have an opportunity to get up to this remarkable forest.

Augusta Savage's 16ft tall sculpture, Lift Every Voice and Sing, was made for New York's 1939 World Fair. However, the organisers thought the title too political--Savage's preferred title is also the title of an African-American anthem--and so changed its name to The Harp. #BlackMastodon #politics #art

Somedays... somedays you just want to hug your latte. Today is one of those days :coffee_mug:

Hanging out with Mr Forg this morning and enjoying the nectar of the gods. Today's roast was aged in single malt whiskey barrels!

@chrisod I said I'd post a view of the upper falls at #Letchworth state park in #UpstateNY with the old trestle bridge to compare with the new one. The old trestle was built in 1875 to replace the original wooden bridge that burned down. Remarkably, the new trestle was opened just 53 days after the fire. This was taken in 2016. #WaterfallWednesday #FingerLakes

One of the best people I’ve had the privilege of knowing passed away today: O. Lawton Wilkerson, who was my grandfather’s best friend for many decades and a Tuskegee Airman.

In the picture below, the gentleman on the left is O. Lawton Wilkerson. I’m in the middle. My grandfather is on the right. For most of my childhood, my grandfather and Lawton jointly owned and flew a Cessna 172. We took this picture shortly before I had the honor of taking them for a flight in my plane.
