"Turmoil in Brazil: Bolsonaro Fires Police Chief and Justice Minister Quits

Sergio Moro, the justice minister who became the face of a powerful anti-corruption crackdown in Brazil, resigned in protest after President Jair Bolsonaro fired the head of the national police."

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/24/world/americas/brazil-bolsonaro-moro.html

@Phaedrus
Thanks for the reference, I remember him from the time when he did the expose on the ex-NSA contractor which went Rogue. A good reporter, he is.

@ggreenwald

@Phaedrus Wow, I am surprised to hear that.

Just visited the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper site and found an interesting, related news item in English :

https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/internacional/en/brazil/2020/04/bolsonaro-competes-with-trump-to-be-the-worst-criminal-on-the-planet-says-noam-chomsky.shtml

There are articles in Portuguese about Miniter Moro's resignation, but not in English version yet. Apparently caused by the president's desire to influence appointments in the Federal Police department, which is under the Justice Ministry's scope.

@IntegralDuChemin Sorry to hear, that's a lot of things to take in these unusual times we are all living in. Hope you feel better soon, sincerely. 😔

@freemo Very cool, congratulations! Well done.

Lots of PaseriCats. 💕🐈😊

#Tuxedo Thursday, two of them. Pretty!

The one in the upper shelf has such a scary expression, the other one pales. 😝💕

@zleap They need to get over the pressure of the health industry, insurance companies, lobbyists and get a publicly funded, single payer health system like most other advanced countries in the OECD.

Difficult, as there's so much money flowing and strong interest in keeping things like they are. But there's always hope.

And I just found a BBC World News Spanish report about the situation in Guayaquil.

"Coronavirus en Ecuador: el drama de Guayaquil con más muertos por covid-19 que países enteros"

https://youtu.be/8fj-C_xCda8

Lots of others, some short, crude, sad street videos showing abandoned bodies. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=guayaquil+video+covid

A helpful clarification, see picture 2. 👍😝#xp

"Covid-19 is spreading to America’s South with unnerving speed

Southern governors are beginning to reopen their states. For most, it is too early.

The South is entering the most dangerous period in which case numbers are large, growth is still high and health systems start to buckle."
