How I feel about 90% of the time on Mastodon, but thanks for letting me hang out

@Sadiqkazi It is, and I'm cautiously optimistic about a return to decentralised networks. Though I'm concerned that many on Mastodon don't realise we're being hosted by individuals who put in time, effort and their own cash to keep their servers and instances running.

Getting off corporate-run Internet services also means returning to a community-run model, which depends on volunteers to donate/ moderate/ help out. I hope we can all step up more in the future.

+ I'm old enough to remember the Web of the 1990s/ 2000s.
It was a maze. You followed hypertext links, stumbled into forums and early troll-caves, used Slashdot and GoTo, experimented with LiveJournal and Blogger.

It wasn't safe, it was filled with weirdness, appealed heavily to geeks and loners. Being on the web in that era was a serious trip.

But it wasn't corporate. It wasn't the tool of major governments, yet. It was defiantly decentralised, and when you were online...

... you felt free.

1. QOTO is run by a computer scientist !! @freemo

2. It offers a 60k charachter limit, so you can rant as much as you want.

3.It is pro free speech and doesn't moderate without warnings.

4. It has other technical features as well, eg- search works differently.

@inditoot is amazing as well, It is pro-free speech and I believe the admin depends on contributions to keep the instance alive.

Both Qoto and inditoot have great relations and I think a no-ban policy as well.

Friendly diplomatic relations.

Would advise people to move out of Mastodon.social though. It is getting overloaded anyway.

friendly reminder that some people have been to hell and back, sit and listen to them, they have stories, wisdom and truth for you

@slowlyapp@twitter.com Android version runs really well on this environment, have been using it so for 5 months or so. Even with the NEW Web version of the app, I still remain with the Android one, feels comfortable..

long post

@qoto A CORRECTION is needed here -- as I have just learned and understand better the Privacy settings to messages.

On one of the posts above, I took as snapshot and described setting the Privacy choice to use for a group message.

In it I selected the "UNLISTED" mode, thinking it was the best, not showing on the public feeds - Local or Federated.

BUT --- it DOES allow the message to be sent to ALL of your followers (blowing away any privacy intention, and maybe annoying people). It ALSO shows the post in your Profile, to anyone curious enough to look there.

That's NOT good;

And upon reading a Guide by Mastodon's lead developer, I now think we should use the "DIRECT" message choice.

- it will have only ONE attribution, the group name we chose. In my example, "@qoto-bikers"

- it will send a message to Guppe, and the bot will process and send a DIRECT message to each person already subscribed to the group.

- Your message will NOT show on public feeds. It will NOT show on your profile either.

*This is Better * -- what we would need.

A good definition of what each type of Privacy setting on a Toot will result on.

Unlisted ? Private ? Direct Message ?

Another user here had posted a link to this - it was on my open, To Read tabs and now I have checked it out. RECOMMENDED!!

And it's a Good Guide! Even after been using the fediverse pretty intensively for the past week, I learned a few things.

Like, what's the result of selecting UNLISTED as the privacy setting for a toot? (it does not show on the public Feed lists, as expected. However it DOES show in your own profile page! 😞 )

Normal datacenter: We need higher cooling capacity for DC3. Our current setup does not move enough heat out of the room, we should talk with management to get additional budget that we can invest in improved cooling.

Norwegian datacenter: bjørn can you go open another window in dc2 real quick

Linus Torvalds: Git is a distributed version control system, which means even if you lose a remote, you still have your local copy, so your code is safe, unlike centralized VCSes.

Developer Community: wut?

Microsoft: Hmm. How about you use our Visual Studio Online and push it to GitHub, both hosted on our computers, so that you don't have a local copy?

Developer Community: Yaay! Such innovation! Very cloud! Much wow! 🎉

Trump: Thou shall not use US services.

Developers: Where's my code? 😭

almost accidentally freezing yourself to death overnight because it's like -15 degrees outside and you forgot to close the window before falling asleep is such a nordic issue

Just saw a mention to an extension for Firefox and compatibles, that can replace uBlock Origin. With extra privacy and finer controls. uMatrix for Firefox :

don't underestimate spreading joy and positivity, especially when concerned with momentum for solutions. hopelessness, despair, and grief do not lend themselves well towards constructive collective action. those in power over us already give us the gifts of hopelessness, despair, and grief, we don't need more, we need people to envision the future they want to birth out of this hell
