My own recommendations under that criteria:

* [Omega Tau Science and Engineering](omegataupodcast.net/category/p) - detailed talks about particular technologies and scientific fields, from Germany.

* [The Green Horizon](buzzsprout.com/270233) - an Irish sci-fi comedy drama, about a bumbling space crew and their hilarious adventures

This is the heatmap of podcasts I listen to. See how much white space there is? Please help me fill those - **if you know of any English-language podcasts outside of the UK and the US**, reply and let me know (Tamil-language also welcome).

I generally listen to deep long form conversations (like Sean Carroll's Mindscape) or comedy podcasts (like Russell and Jon's 6Music radio show), but I'm open to anything; I'll give it a try if you say you like it.

(I want to diversify the places I consume media from, and this is a step towards that goal.)

It would be interesting to have a service that gives you summaries of the news from 6 or 12 months ago, with care taken to cover the general response and counter-narratives.

I've fallen back into the old habit of typing up long replies, then thinking "this probably isn't worth posting", "I don't have anything original to add", "this is all probably obvious to them anyway", etc., and Ctrl-A deleting it.

I've learnt intellectually that those aren't true as often as they seem they are, and I've trained myself to post things even when they don't match up to some made up measure of being "good enough", but some days none of that matters, just back to the base model my mind goes.

Is it just me or are the Avatar pictures on timelines not loading for others too? I can click through to profiles and they're visible there, but in Home, Local, and Fedi timelines I get just the default Mastodon elephanthead.

@ashwinvis
I follow a bunch of their RSS feeds (of the Tamil Hindu actually, but the English version also seems to have them: thehindu.com/rssfeeds/). I guess the paywalled articles will automatically be excluded from the feeds? Not sure about how that's going to be handled.

If they're not sticking to the deal and are willing to add arbitrary additional conditions on it, then this becomes more of a long-term blackmail situation. At that point you have evaluate the number of potential additional conditions they could add and the probability of you being able to comply with every single one of them... which might well lead you to conclude that you might as well enjoy your wealth while you have it, even if it's going to be followed by eternal torture.

scared/hurt dogs, war reference, racism

One consequence of Deepavali (Diwali) is scared dogs. I spent most of yesterday comforting my dog and trying to distract her from the unexpected and (from her view) unexplainable loud bangs from time to time. (She's gotten more used to it compared to last year, and I'm not gonna complain about spending time with my dog.)

But that made me think, someone should make a movie about dogs in the middle east, and how the bombs and invasion and drones affect them. America doesn't respond much to news of innocent civilians lives ruined and even to children being murdered, doesn't result in any concrete change, but footage of dogs being hurt or malnourished will get more concern. Those are more likely to go viral on Instagram etc., and get the emotional response appropriate to what's happening.
Brown people's lives obviously don't matter by this point, but dogs are still cute, right?

Some days it feels like you could replace most of LessWrong posts with /r/VXJunkies posts and I wouldn't notice a difference

Happy deepavali friends (and acquaintances, and other randos that hopefully will become acquaintances one day)! Let your worries burst apart like firecrackers, and joy bloom like a flowerpot.

@satanskrapfen
Then why isn't the earth called high earth? Unless... that's what Tolkien meant with the middle earth stuff! He wanted us all to start calling our world the high earth, because he was woke to this fact.

@glitterwitch
My experience has been that it's often mocking the weird-ass no-effort anglicisation of such names (around the world, not specifically in the US - I'm not American). The actual name hiding underneath often turns out to be beautiful in both meaning and pronunciation.
So I'm OK with such mocking as long as someone learns the actual name and its meaning in its original form.

@faho
I once read someone saying that a million dollar fund to improve LaTeX might the best thing money can do for science in terms of effectiveness, because of how many thousands of student-hours and scientist-hours are wasted fighting its idiosyncrasies and misbehaviors, that could have instead been spent in doing productive research.

@choutos
When you look into it, most analyses in most fields turn out to be what the second paragraph describes. They're just experienced enough to bury that fact under the rug. I appreciate these authors' naivete/idealism, and hope (but not really believe) such analyses in this field continue in this honest direction, without resorting to statistical and other standard trickery to get results.

Epstein - like other conspirators - used legal threats and worse to attack people who threatened to expose him (think of Harvey Weinstein hiring ex-Mossad agents to harass women who publicly accused him).

So there was a period when Epstein was a "conspiracy theory" (because his crimes hadn't been brought to light and publicly acknowledged) and then they became a mere "conspiracy" - in public view.
