Markdown + pandoc, writing articles (+)
I ❤️ using pandoc to convert markdown content simultaneously to various formats that I can e-mail people at work for feedback:
– PDF, because it’s beautiful to look at and the physics nerds will appreciate LaTeX-formatted content
– HTML, so those on their phones can open it with the built-in web browser with a font size that isn’t tiny
– DOCX, for those who need to edit the document and/or send me comments
Thanks to one makefile I copy into new projects.
I want to write a technical/design article about computer systems and how they treat names.
Based on my knowledge of and social experience with white America, cisgender men almost never have to even give the slightest thought to their name ever changing.
But I wanted to check myself and scope that assertion, if needed. Is men changing names common in other cultures? ![]()
@Feuerfuchs This was part of one of the original places to implement endless scrolling: the 'Never-ending reddit' part of Reddit Enhancement Suite. Unfortunately the other places that implemented it later didn't copy this part of it.
So the other day I was talking with my dad and he thought I said "there's heat to that" and he thought it was slang meaning that a phrase is truthful or has some validity. I don't remember what we were talking about but anyway I want to make "there's heat to that" slang for "what you just said was truthful/valid" who's with me
Tips for Americans trying to use the internet
1) If something is "national", you need to specify it is the _American_ national thing. Other countries have their own national things.
2) If talking about states, you need to specify it is _American_ states. Other countries have their own states, and they don't care or know about yours.
3) Same for "the government", unless you are talking about all governments in general.
4) The majority of countries in the world are "other countries" and not the US.
The Amateur Science website on this list (amasci.com - called "Science Hobbyist here) was one of my first introductions to how amazing the Web can be, back in the early 00's.
As an inquisitive electronics student that was butting my head against the usual explanations and coming up short, this was a godsend.

"We share websites that are made by amateurs, hobbyists, and nerds; takes less than 1MB to load; use little Javascript; and use hand-written HTML and CSS."
No free view? No review!
Scientific publishers are rampant when they hear scientists proposing a fair relationship between the general public and scientists when it comes to peer-reviewing scientific papers and accessing the fruits of the same work funded by tax-payers' money. Hence consider sharing this campaign!
Having said that, it does feel like the mindshare for FOSS has decreased, not increased, since the 90's. The number of FOSS projects is larger, but the proportion of developers who understand and care about FOSS ideals has gone down, maybe severely. I'll partially fault those of us who learnt those Free Software principles alongside coding, but then failed to pass it on as well to the newer programmers - we were more eager to write Blog posts about Haskell monads and about how to send your users through your startup funnel, than to write about why Free software is important and what that vision of the future looks like.

@hardbass2k8 @lain @njoseph and even among software with a user interface, a vast majority of programmers are working on the nth copy of a PHP website editing configuration files, or making minor tweaks to code from elsewhere that only applies to their specific situation. Among those who create original software worth sharing, the share of FOSS programmers looks a lot more decent than 1%
