@wickedgood
Yeah, I've seen more meta-discussion about Mastodon in these past few weeks than I had in years of being here before that, and by now it's getting kind of stale (even though I understand it's useful for the non-stop stream of newcomers, and have contributed to it myself).
I'm hoping it's just a temporary thing, and I do already see it slowing down in my timeline.
As you're considering the other new Twitter alternatives, ask yourself if you really want to go to another corporate entity that could end up being just as bad as Twitter and Facebook. Algorithmic sites, by design, reward hate and outrage. You're jumping into another fire.
We have a rare and fleeting chance to build something different right now.
I'm choosing to spend my time trying to make this place succeed — helping new users and saving my best content for here.

It seems like this list isn't publicly available on my instance (#qoto). Running this code gives me "401 Unauthorized" error, and trying to see https://qoto.org/web/accounts/384411/followers in a private window opens a Sign-in page, not a followers list.
Trying to work out the difference between https://a.gup.pe/ and hashtags
So I'm technically undiagnosed to this day, because an #ActuallyAutistic doctor thought he was doing me a favour! He was gatekeeping me (and possibly others like me) out of "good" intentions, because of the trauma he himself had suffered and apparently never worked through.
#Autism #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #autistic #AutisticAdults #AutismDiagnosis
Turned out over the course of the conversation, that he had been diagnosed as autistic in his early 20s, had a lot of associated trauma around it himself, and so thought of the diagnosis as some kind of mark of doom.
Trying to tell him that I just wanted to understand myself better and didn't think of it as a negative thing, didn't go anywhere. (2/n)

I have a hilarious(ly sad) story about the gatekeeping:
I finally found a psychologist in my small Indian town that I had rapport with, took my online test results and talked about my experiences, and asked about a diagnosis.
He seemed weirdly resistant to the idea without giving any reasons, and kept diverting the conversation. (1/n continued below)

Being #ActuallyAutistic in our society means that we have experienced profound trauma in our lives. For many, that trauma is still present. We ignore it and try to work thru it, but it's there in our bodies & minds. We need to emphasize the need for trauma work in our community.

In general I agree with you and *don't* want defederation to happen unless absolutely necessary.
But mastodon.social shouldn't be immune to consequences just because the lead developer has a hand in it. Letting the codebase be held hostage in that way would defeat the entire point of the Open Fediverse idea. We should treat it like any other instance and consider it if things ever get bad enough to justify it - **but** in this case I think there's still room for communication and correction, and I hope things get resolved in a friendly way.
Me getting ready to go to a medical conference key in my field: ok, I’m more or less ready to talk to the experts, should be fine (deep breath)
Me getting ready to go to my sons’ school career fair: oh dear, I’m having a massive freak out moment, I know whatever they ask me I’ll say the wrong thing
Don’t underestimate teenagers, they’re very intelligent. But I’ll be fine 😀
@JMBagniewska
So many ways our brains are affected by external factors that weren't traditionally considered - first the big role of the gut microbiome, and now (potentially) this kind of interaction with parasites - there's so much territory in psychology and neuroscience that we probably don't even know exists, much less have explored.
There's been ripples in the wider Mastodon community for several days about mastodon.social's moderation, and people have been actively moving away from it. I hadn't seen talk about defederation, but it makes sense that people consider it if it's problems are being exposed one by one.

Qoto is *based* on Mastodon v3.2.1, but it's actually a fork i.e. @freemo took the code and added a lot of features (incl. the Markdown support, quote posts, etc.) in Qoto's branch of the code, so the version number doesn't tell the full story. In this case, I believe Qoto added hashtag-following before the main Mastodon code did, you can find it at https://qoto.org/settings/follow_tags or going Preferences -> Follows and Subscriptions -> Following hashtags
@trinsec
True. I used to think like "if 80% of someone's posts are good, I should follow them", and I had some FOMO (fear of missing out) if I didn't. But nowadays I've realized it should be more like "if more than 5% of someone's posts are negative and unconstructive, it's not worth following them".
#TIL, For those in #stem or #research or #academia, https://qoto.org is the best option for finding an anchor in the #fediverse; @freemo has created an ecosystem where one can maintain codes, talk about work and life, and discuss -- a library and a water cooler all in one place.
Just amazing.
And instead of 500 characters, you can post stuff over 65K characters, plus add images and in markdown.
This is good, crazy good if you ask me!
Sometimes, I go back to check the Bird site. And even though during scrolling I see things that catch my attention, upon reflection I am always surprised how deeply negative and sarcastic everything is.
Everything is a sneer, a critique, ridiculing something or someone.
And the contrast mastodon offers is so refreshing. It really feels you can still have a reasonable exchange of ideas over here. I really hope we can keep it like that...
