Lately more and more open source projects are becoming mainstream.

Thanks to #SteamDeck, gaming on #linux has become a priority while some years ago it was still niche.

@godotengine has become a very useful engine that is powering many enterprises.

And now, #mastodon and the #fediverse are showing us that we do not need propietary services in order to communicate with each other, which has become so difficult in the last years with all the noise that is generated by those services.

This is the era of #opensource.

Expect some of the following to happen in the coming weeks:

- celebrities with huge follower counts pushing tiny community-run servers to their knees

- instance admin burnout; shutting down of servers

- big new servers that don't "vibe" with common rules or culture being widely defederated

- some notable account violating an instance code of conduct and throwing a fit

- lots of people ragequitting Mastodon for one reason or another

- etc.

It'll be a rough ride. Patience and strength, all.

How to migrate from one Mastodon server to another without losing followers:

1. Sign up on new server
2. On NEW server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
3. Enter old account's handle
4. On OLD server: Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
5. Enter new account's handle and submit

What do you guys usually use for online communication/collaboration for research? Slack? Discord?

Have you guys explored any open-source and free alternative?

I have been using Zulip for the last couple of months or so and I must say, it is superior to either Slack or Discord! Supports LaTeX and Markdown. Threads are better organised. And the best part: you get a free license if you plan on using it for research!

I think the more about “Mastodon has its own culture” is super important.

Yes, it’s expected that those of us leaving the bird site come here with certain habits and expectations.

However, the Mastodon community existed before we got here and there’s a lot we can (un)learn about our relationship with social media from the wider community.

I've seen a lot of people saying that liking posts here is pointless, but I absolutely love the way it works - it feels like what this sort of feature is actually supposed to do.

If I put a star on a toot, I'm not trying to blast it to the universe, I just want to quietly inform the poster that I liked or appreciated what they shared. Not everything needs a comment and I don't always have the mental energy to make one, but I still want someone to know that I valued their thought.

Why are you really doing that?

Rank username matches same, not lower than display name matches
Use reputation score (more followers than following) as a boost
Use log over followers as a boost
Use gaussian decay from last posted timestamp as a boost
This should bring the results a little closer in quality to the elasticsearch ones...

Please don't do that. We don't want reputation scores and competition, what the hell?

More random #security thoughts:

1. Mastodon is pretty chill but expect a surge of troll activity with all the attention. Nothing is totally immune to the challenges associated with attention/scale.
2. Try to be open to new followers but check them out - Who do they follow? Who follows them?
3. Block quickly at any hint of malicious behavior/hate/trolling. Don't engage. Keep the vibe positive.
4. If you see patterns of abuse share that information with your followers.

Just resist the urge. Because you're not going to think to check for robots.txt, but you ought to, that's how we communicate we don't want to be involved. You're probably not going to bother to read the various terms of service for the instances you touch, many of which explicitly ask you not to do any scraping or automated activity beyond normal use of the service. You're not going to know to respect people using the NoBot hashtag that was meant to prevent automated follows. You're certainly not going to parse user profiles and pinned posts to learn how people like to be approached, what will get you blocked, or even think to heavily throttle your activity because instances are falling over in response to load.

Whatever your thing is, make it 100% opt-in. Make it appropriate for a significantly more at-risk user than you are. Make sure it forgets things, purges info about servers it can't contact, can't operate in any sort of logged-in mode where consent is an issue.

We will straight up help advertise your cool thing if it respects users properly and takes the time to consider the safety and preferences of every person involved. There are a lot of fun, thoughtfully-designed toys! And there are a lot of people really tired of having to come and tell you off when you wanted to help, honestly. Help yourself and ask around before you flip on your cool new thing, let folks point out what you're missing.

Mastodon reminds me of why I used to like social media back in my early blogging days on the ScienceBlogs network.

Julia has a lot to offer: it's a very well put together language, has a great interactive prompt, reproducible easy project environments and dependeny management, etc. It really shines when you want to write a lot of custom code yourself - writing that in Julia is relatively easy and can be made very fast.

Python's strength is its history and community. (1/n)
