Exciting times for the #astrophysics community, as evidence of a new class of #GravitationalWaves is revealed.
Scientists suggest they are caused by pairs of supermassive black holes merging and generating ripples in space-time.
Yeah, cosmic gravitational noise is cool... but check out this brand-new image of the Milky Way taken in *neutrinos*!

Thanks to @bstacey for pointing this out.
Neutrinos are so invisible that one of them could pass easily through a slab of lead one light-year thick. Yet the team at the IceCube observatory managed to detect them & make a picture of the neutrino sky (bottom).

Allen, TX mass murderer wore a “right wing death squad” patch
1. Armed w/an AR-15
2. A Nazi
3. Former US military
4. Radicalized on social media
#4 is why "algorithm choice" marketed by #Dorsey/#Bluesky is NOT a solution. Do you think if you don't see his posts, a radicalized right winger is less likely to murder?
His "social media accounts revealed hundreds of postings & images [&] writings with [racist] violent extremist rhetoric, including neo-Nazi materials"
If anyone isn't familiar with Teletext archaeology, it's a lot of fun. Teletext pages (back in the day) were encoded just outside the visible bit of the picture (unless your scanning was out, in which case you'd see flickers at the top of the screen.
VHS recordings, of ANYTHING, would include this data, so it can be recovered.
Follow @grim_fandango and others to see it extracted and encoded. Nice bit of digital history technique.
Free software is about much more than zero-cost. It's about the freedom to use, study, modify and share software. So we're increasing public policy-related activities in the EU, to raise awareness of this: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2023/04/11/report-about-policy-related-activities-in-the-eu/ #foss #opensource #libreoffice #eu
Laplace's Rule of Succession essentially says "if you see k heads out of n coin flips and you have no additional info, your best estimate for the bias of the coin is (k+1)/(n+2)." (What?! 😲)
It actually says a bit more, but that's the gist of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_succession
Unfortunately, the standard proof of this is very clunky and ugly, involving computations with the Beta distribution, integrals, and whatnot.
Except for this nice, "symmetry-based" argument! 🏆 Outlined in this blog post by Eric Neyman: https://ericneyman.wordpress.com/2020/11/29/an-elegant-proof-of-laplaces-rule-of-succession/
2/ About 40,000 years from now, I will pass within 1.65 light-years of the star Ross 248, and be closer to it than to the Sun, but the reality is that 1.65 light-years is still an insurmountable distance. Every other star I will pass within the next _million_ years will be more than 2 light years from me. It is very likely that I will not _ever_ encounter anything. I will last longer than humans, longer than Earth, longer than the Sun. I will see the merger between the Milky Way & Andromeda galaxies,& possibly be flung out of the combined supergalaxy into truly, truly, empty space. I will see the last of the stars extinguish, & the flashes of evaporating black holes. Eventually the matter that I was made of back on Earth will reach a time where my protons will decay, and I will simply fade away, along with the last of the longest wavelengths of light, stretched out by the expansion and cold death of the universe.

#EU #Surveillance #CSAM #Privacy: "The European Parliament is debating a proposal that, if it passes, could be disastrous for privacy worldwide. Every message, photo, or hosted file could be scanned, with the results sent to government agencies.
We don’t need “bugs in our pockets.” A private and secure internet should be built with privacy and security in mind—not by treating every user like they’re in a criminal lineup.
This proposal is meant to stem the spread of child abuse material online. But abused children need privacy and security as much as anyone. Privacy-protecting technologies, like end-to-end encryption, let both minors and adults reach out for trusted help."

Alrighty, my car is now powering my fridge, freezer, modem/router (which happens to be a very power-hungry Starlink modem) and laptop.
I will leave this setup in place for 24 hours and will also use the car's power supply to cook meals during this time.
I want to know exactly how long the Vehicle to Load* function can realistically keep me going through a power outage. I predict close to a week, but soon I'll know for sure!
*This V2L function/adapter is unique to Hyundai/Kia E-GMP cars

A lesson for our times - as is the case today 100 years later - where there is a scientific answer out there, debates will never help us decide the truth, but only help us identify what issues need to be clarified #science #debate https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/science-greatest-debate/
Sean Carroll talks to Andrew Strominger about Quantum Gravity and the Real World. The course of string theory, and how we try to connect it to black holes and the accelerating universe. it’s easy to “do research on quantum gravity” and get lost in a world of toy models and mathematical abstraction but not in the case of Andrew. https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2023/01/09/222-andrew-strominger-on-quantum-gravity-and-the-real-world/
