Not what I’d have expected from NPR, but it’s 100% true. Good for them.

It’s crazy how well #mastodon works given that it’s nearly entirely community driven.

It’s almost as if we don’t even need #bigtech, we just need passion, purpose, code, and connectivity.

We, #trans people, youth and adults, just wanna live. Oh, and thrive.
That's all.

We want human rights.
We want health care, decided by our doctors, not politicians.
We wanna pee, in peace.

It's simple.

If you find any of it problematic, you're the problem.

I always have mixed feelings about trans awareness week and trans day of visibility, because most cis people who talk about it go exclusively for the "you are valid" angle instead of the "trans healthcare has collapsed entirely and we need to do something about that" angle. Like I appreciate the first one, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it reads as a little shallow when you don't also talk about the second. You get me?

You can just be a girl if you want. It’s okay. Or a boy, or something else, or no gender at all. You’re not too old, or too young, or too much, or not enough, or trespassing, or appropriating, or causing trouble. It’s okay. Really.

But the important thing is: do what you want, not what you think you’re allowed. Find the joy and follow that. You can experiment and you can change your mind. That’s okay too.

To further subtoot: There’s been heated debate the last few years about separating the art from the artist, and allowing for the 'peccadilloes of the gifted,' etc. Speaking for myself, and many I know in the entertainment industry, working with abusers, bigots and raging jerks is a drag and not worth it for their presumed 'artistry.' The job is hard enough as it is and there are plenty of talented artists who aren't terrible human beings and/or a nightmare to work with.

Software engineering is "programming over time." (Says the flamingo book.)

This is pretty similar to what I used to say: programming is "type something" (sounds easy enough), software engineering is "deal with the existence of what was typed" (it depends, but this can be a lot harder than typing.)

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.
