'The danger of continuing to use the term “artificial intelligence” is that it risks convincing us that the world runs on a singular logic: that of highly cognitive, cold-blooded rationalism. Many in Silicon Valley already believe that – and they are busy rebuilding the world informed by that belief.' #aiaiai

Watching Time Team.

Phil's just stuck in a trench to try and find a Tory council. Geophys swear it's there, but nobody believes them.

I wrote a moderately detailed description of what Twitter seems to be doing for encrypted DMs. tl;dr - better than unencrypted DMs, worse than Signal or WhatsApp. mjg59.dreamwidth.org/66791.htm

Camina Drummer has left an indelible mark on television.
I’ll say, that although Camina Drummer unique, I do love the tributes paid to her by other series like Star Trek SNW, or Sweet Tooth.

Thank you, TV producers, for not letting us go without Drummer in our lives even after The Expanse has ended. #StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds #SweetTooth #TheExpanse #ScreamingFirehawks #Beltalowda

@neil DuckDuckGo, for many years now. I find it’s much better than Google due to prioritising StackOverflow answers to programming queries (which is probably half my searches) and Wikipedia for generic stuff like ‘tell me about this drug I’ve just been prescribed’.

February 2026: the UK blocks all non-UK websites in the name of “child protection”. Or “anti-terrorism”. No-one is sure, as the notes are in Dropbox, which is now blocked, and the ministerial discussion was on WhatsApp, which ministers used because it was end to end encrypted and which they blocked because it was end to end encrypted.

The UK’s official Mastodon instance is launched with the slogan “A British site for British people”, forgetting Northern Ireland.
