SUSE has gone through more than its fair share of corporate restructuring, and here comes another one. opensourcewatch.beehiiv.com/p/ by @sjvn

Well, I didn't see this coming—shame on me. SUSE, one of the oldest #Linux companies, is being taken private by its majority stockholder.

To explain, what's happening here is I'm taking apart an integer-based ray tracing program implementation, with the intent of rewriting it to run on an FPGA. The FPGA doesn't have enough RAM to hold a framebuffer, so conventional tri rendering would be hard, but it *might* be fast enough to raytrace every single pixel just in time to shove that pixel out the door to the HDMI port just as the HDMI display expects it. Beam-chaser ray tracing. Raychasing

To all my colleagues from #research, #science, and #humanities: Taking into account the new #nature article on #twitter's demise, please help to get a clearer picture on what this means for us scientists who are (within my reach) on #Mastodon:

15 min into #Babylon5 The Road Home and I’m loving it. Voice acting is top notch. The actress playing Delenn, Rebecca Riedy, sounds just like Mira Furlan. Also Phil LaMarr as Franklin… wow. Swear it was him. Great job! On with the show!

Some quick non-spoilery thoughts about #babylon5theroadhome -
It’s definitely a love letter to/for long-time fans. Unexpectedly, there’s an emphasis on the humor and, expectedly, on the humanistic themes of the show. Plot, not so much.
It is NOT a place to introduce the uninitiated.
But it’s also clearly a pivot point if the the reboot gets the green light.

The Road Home was a love letter of greatest hits.

Tingle's from stupid things like B5 deploying its weapons.

Music that could have been made from the original.

Will watch again.

Theere's a browser fingerprinting study run by the CS faculty at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Nürnberg.

If you sign up, they send you a link once aweek then run device ID scripts, and play it all back to you.

Fascinating and slightly disturbing.

And it's #science

Long shot...

I have an SD card belonging to a friend, with the last photos she has of her late husband. Unfortunately it seems to have a hairline fracture. Very occasionally I can get as USB reader to recognise the card and the first 4K block, but it's usually dead as a door nail. I'm sure an expensive lab could recover it, but that's well out of reach. Any sane ideas welcome.

I asked AI to show me the rest of Colin the shopkeeper from Xenon 2 and immediately regretted it.

@Mer__edith People have a sense of entitlement about the tools they use and how they feel they should be able to use them. i'm not entirely innocent of this, myself, as I still don't fully agree about removing SMS capability, or certain things that other systems I use have done, and I'm not shy about saying it…

…but signal is free, secure, and invaluable to my and like… a lot of other people's lives, so while I might not like a particular move you all make, and I might want to have a conversation about it, I'm not gonna try to be an asshole about my disagreement.

Another BBC anti-encryption piece, this time quoting uncritically someone saying

> "We don't think there's a trade-off between safety and privacy, we think it's about investing in those technical solutions which we know are out there, that can deliver for the privacy and safety of all users on these services."

Surely any journalist worth their salt would have pressed that person to explain what they mean by their vague “those technical solutions which we know are out there”?

We’ve been hard at work making changes to #BBC #iPlayer to speed up the time it takes to get programmes to viewers.

Previously if you missed the restart window for a programme you'd have to wait for the programme to go through high-quality encoding (which takes time) and then it would be available on iPlayer.

Now we use an interim version captured at the time which you can watch straight away and we replace this with the high-quality version as soon as its ready.

I think the Internet Archive has about a year or less before being closed down. They face multiple lawsuits demanding better collection management - but they have little or no curation at all.

Just go look for yourself: Taylor Swift albums jumbled up with console games, copied blu rays and random video with no tags - a real museum has direction, purpose and the IA needs to staff up and stop being a huge dumpster of random shit. Or the inevitable will happen.

Ever wondered what's in those security tags on bottles in supermarkets?

They didn't remove mine. Or stop me at the door as we took the trolley out.

Easy to open with hack saw. More complicated than expected. A resistor!?!

NSFW semi nude

Ok, you responded to my shameless call for boosts so here’s a happy semi nude picture I took this morning after catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror feeling comfy and at peace.

Japan Earthquake Alert App (1.9 million followers) Says Sayonara to X

"[..]We have decided that if we were to spend over ¥700,000 per month that it would be better if this money could go to developing our NERV app and strengthening our ActivityPub servers instead of X’s API. Therefore, we are beginning to cut down on our posts on X."
