As Hyperloop One shuts down, we need to remember that the Hyperloop was never meant to be built.

Elon Musk’s goal was never to transform transportation for the masses, but to stop or delay high-speed rail reaching North America. Sadly, he succeeded. While the rest of the world moved forward, the US remains stuck in the past, only able to hand out EV subsidies instead of freeing people from car dependence.

I’m struggling to deal with this version of the internet, where hosts are removing people for voluntarily nudity, but not removing nazis.

And a big part of that is because banks & credit card processing companies won’t allow nudity and sex stuff but are totally ok with hate speech.

From a risk perspective this is asinine - very few people have ever died as a result of naked tits, while we’re watching people be murdered in hate attacks daily.

Everything is fucked and backwards.

Also, a wholehearted f* you to SEC Consult, who sat on this since June and disclosed it to some closed-source vendors and MSPs, but could apparently not be bothered to give e.g. Postfix a heads-up, publishing this close to the holidays.

The master tapes have been found by the ReBoot Rewind documentary crew and they need our help with finding a working D1 tape deck to digitize them.

Hey you, YES YOU! We have some good news to share!

For years, there have been rumours circulating about the status of the original PAL D1 masters of ReBoot and whether they still exist. After visiting Mainframe Studios yesterday to take a look through their ReBoot archives, we’re happy to confirm that the masters are all here, for every episode of the show!

Getting a proper digital transfer of the D1 masters is high priority item for us. It would mean having the entire series in the best possible picture and sound quality, presented as accurately as the day it was rendered. There’s also a library of additional ReBoot content (animation tests, toy commercials, Electronic Arts video game footage, IMAX content) that is currently stuck on the D1 format and we need to preserve it for the future. This would obviously benefit the documentary but ultimately, it would benefit the fans the most!

Here’s where we need help. We need a working D1 tape deck to capture all these tapes. Mainframe hasn’t had one for years. We haven’t been able to find anyone in Vancouver, British Columbia, or even all of Canada that has one of these tape decks. We’d greatly prefer buying or renting one of these decks so that the tapes can be captured locally, without needing to ship them.

If anyone has a lead on where we might be able to get one of these decks, please contact us!

A few last thoughts about Facebook and Threads.

Their claimed user numbers are obviously bullshit. Even taken at face value, millions of people clicking a new button is not millions of people using a new service.

Second, their business is serving ads only. They have as an organization proven, repeatedly, that they will accept any adverse human impact up to and including genocide as long as their graphs go up. Their stated intentions are irrelevant and believing otherwise makes you a mark.

I largely walked away from Facebook about 5 years ago, but I didn't nuke my account, because I have close family members who still post there, despite agreeing it's horrible, and every so often I go in there to check what they have posted recently. I refuse to post anything new or otherwise interact with it except for this one limited use case -- which *would* go away if my family would start avoiding it consistently, but they don't.

I once asked one of these close family members which of Facebook, Google, Amazon, Apple, and Netflix was the most terrible; my vote was for Amazon because of its absolutely atrocious labor practices, but his was for Facebook because Amazon at least has something that could be a socially valuable business model if the labor issues were worked out, whereas Facebook's model is actively fucking with billions of people's mental health and social stability. He still actively uses Facebook regardless, largely because of the network effects.
