Twitter and Musk's fanboys

Content moderation is inherently a human job. You're looking for things that are hurtful to human beings, and there's no algorithm that can come close to doing that well.

But engineers can write tools to help that search. Word searches. Blacklists. Flexible ban systems. Tools to flag content, and tools to review flags.

Story in the Times this morning saying the Online Safety Bill will include a ‘user preference filter’ option to turn off ‘legal but harmful’ content. Also that the content won’t be defined in a separate SI list. This doesn’t stop their phone privacy breaking attempts to destroy E2EE with client-side scanning. Amazingly the Times reports Labour are opposing even this ‘watering down’ of the bill.

This is one of my favorite pictures. It feels like it was taken yesterday… but it was taken in a Paris public garden nearly a hundred years ago. Everything feels modern: the composition, the casualness, the daring clothes, haircuts, and accessories.

The colors are original: this is an #autochrome, using the first process for color #photography invented by the Lumière brothers in 1903.

The women are unknown, but I can't help wondering how they fared a few years later in nazi-occupied Paris.

Just a reminder @joinmastodon delisted a server yesterday specifically because that server took measures to protect the physical safety of their LGBTQ community and refuse to even engage in conversation with anyone about it causing a huge out lash on .

Amazon Alexa is a colossal failure on pace to lose $10 billion for the company this year. Good. Couldn't have happened to a nicer product. Stop normalizing filling your house with always-on microphones controlled by billionaires.

The British version:

1XX - I'm sorry, would you mind waiting?
2XX - So sorry for keeping you waiting
3XX - Deeply sorry, but I don’t think I can help you
4XX - Dreadfully sorry, but I think you may be mistaken
5XX - Terribly sorry, this is so embarrassing

I’d love to work on something which contributes to pushing the web itself or developer experience forward. Ideally at Director-level at a more established company that does remote working well, and which is genuinely inclusive

I'd appreciate any introductions or leads for things you think could be exciting. Thanks in advance! 💙

@profcarroll this is one of the one things that I'm actually worried about. 🫣 Not existential to the 'verse, but in a "will harm users and their relationships" kind of way.

When I built DMs on twitter, it was SMS only, and you had to type "d username message"; it was a foot gun beyond compare. As soon as we could improve the UX affordance, we did, because it led to many embarrassing moments. 😬

The Twitter network was small then, no-one had preconceptions about how DM worked, and (cont'd)

I believe I may have graduated to step 6 of the above list. Possibly even a new step 6.5 where I see someone link to their Twitter and I think, blimey, you're still on Twitter?
I was not expecting the little seesaw in my brain to tip over quite this fast, and I'm halfway expecting it to tip back again.

The best argument against "capitalism breed innovation" is Los Angeles. Their answer to everything is just more cars. Want to travel 20 miles across town? Enjoy sitting in an Uber on the 405 for 2 hours. Like, where are the maglevs and e-VTOLs? Even a normal train would be better than this.

Why are people from Norway so good at editing files in Linux?

Their ancestors are vi-kings.

With Trump back on the platform, users abandoning it leaving behind mostly fascists, racists and crypto scammers, and advertisers fleeing, Elon Musk has successfully turned Twitter into a Truth Social clone.
