lol, Twitter is unverifying all original verified users then making it so accounts will only show up in the algorithm if they pay for Twitter Blue. Gonna be interesting to see if there's enough attention seeking losers to power a $44 billion dollar platform at $11 a pop.

My newest blog post on my .dev site. This one is titled "Falsehoods programmers believe about addresses and location data" and is recycled from an old Github gist of mine on top of some feedback from my Mastodon followers

Privacy for all should be a goal—but the UK's Online Safety Bill would undermine privacy for everyone. It could also make the problem of child safety worse, not better. Tell the UK’s House of Lords to protect end-to-end encryption and privacy in the bill: act.eff.org/action/tell-the-uk

@ojb10 I note that about a decade ago it was reported that a Tory party conference was attended by more corporate lobbyists than party rank-and-file members. And last year, the Tory party received more income from legacy bequests than from membership dues. (And also, a Conservative party membership subscription is £5/year and there are no residence/citizenship tests—Vladimir Putin could drop £100K/year and buy 20% of their voting memberships, thereby choosing the next PM.)

Round 1 of test panels :D It's a very incomplete scene, but was fun to work on while I'm sick on the couch. Need to add in space and missing panels/dialogue eventually.

Hoping these aren't terrible to preview. It feels like too many to post 1 at a time. Will check and figure out how to best post the other 4

@Edent depends a little on your definition of a programming language. Any scripting language inside a proprietary app (Visual Basic for Applications; Google Apps Script; stuff like Maya/Autodesk are also debatably programming). AppleScript. Mathematica and Matlab. Build systems such as Xcode (you can write a swift or ObjC app, but you can't meaningfully publish it or run it on an iPhone without proprietary libraries and tools). Flash, although that's gone now. QBasic (ha!). Visual Basic?

I wish more people understood that "I want the computer to generate a natural language text that sounds like a plausible answer to a question about x" and "I want the computer to answer a question about x" are two very different problems.

It's interesting -- during the development of the Amiga, artists were contracted to come in and draw impressive and demonstrative digital art using versions of the first Amiga drawing program, "Graphicraft," so early on in its development that file operations had yet to be implemented. The drawings were completed, photographed by Commodore, and then lost to the ether when the system was powered off.

It's amazing to contemplate, so groundbreaking were some of these works, carried out on a $1,295 consumer-oriented computer in 1985.

One such example is "Four-Byte Burger" by Jack Haeger, here scanned from one of the Amiga 1000's manual covers.

@mjg59 Why are keys committed to repositories at all?

Also, “inadvertently published” is blameless language (which is a good thing) for “a developer pushed it,” which means a GitHub devs have the private keys on their workstations or dev VMs.
