Tried Threads for 48 hours and my verdict is, it's definitely what it was intended to be: text posts for Instagram. It’s probably good if you’re used to the IG algorithm, but for people from Twitter/Mastodon/BlueSky looking for the classic social media feel, it’s basically unusable.

Launching without a following feed seemed like an extremely weird call, given it's the easiest to design. I assumed the algorithm would pick up the slack, but it hasn't. It's near impossible to find posts from people you follow, reposts seem to just go into the void, and there's no text search.

Threads is ideal if what you want from social media is being blasted by generic content from celebrities, but if you're looking for community, it's not viable. I've basically spent 48h there just twiddling my thumbs waiting to be able to find posts from people I actually care about, meanwhile most of them have already got bored and left.

🔴 Over 80 international civil society organisations, academics and cyber-experts warn the UK government that the Online Safety Bill threatens the security and privacy of billions of people who use apps like WhatsApp and Signal.

Encrypted messaging protects people’s security online. But powers to scan private messages in the Online Safety Bill will expose people to hacking and abuses of private information.

@ymstnt @ellenor2000 Indeed. in fact, we're not even defaulting to the view you see in these screenshots. So it should still feel very comfortable to people who are used to the existing layouts.

Bloody monarchs!

Just went to the pub to avoid corronation embuggeration closing off the entire city centre, only to be held up crossing the main road by royal motorcade!

In ~2014, my colleague & I argued that social media (esp. Twitter) had become part of the critical infrastructure of disaster response. People were turning to Twitter during crises to share information about impacts and resources. Disaster responders were using the data shared there for situational awareness, and were communicating in real-time with their constituents. Today’s events underscore just how dangerous it is for society to come to rely on private platforms as critical infrastructure.

What's Happening?
Twitter's hosting contract with Google Cloud expired on June 30th.
Word is that Elon has been trying to move everything off so he doesn't have to pay the reported $1 BILLION bill.
Either he's done nothing, or that migration hasn't been completed yet.
Google Cloud, out of contract, has potentially rate-limited Twitter's data.
With tremendous foresight, Elon blocked access to non-accounts YESTERDAY in an attempt to mitigate the damage or negotiate lesser usage fees.
Instead, this caused the embedded tweets on every website to fail to load and instead retry again, again, and again, resulting in a self-inflicted denial of service event everywhere.
Elon is now imposing "temporary" view limits in an attempt to keep the site up at all until the migration is complete, he re-engineers the embedded reloads, or he pays his Google Cloud bill.
Now he's decided to use the situation to try to sell subscriptions.
Elon is neither a business nor a technology genius.

@nixCraft Dang. I wonder when they'll start putting warnings on websites that bring Chrome to a crawl when they load 6,000 ads.

The mobile web is especially bad without an ad blocker.

Part of me hopes we can recapture some of that...but I fear those days are gone. They were a beautiful bubble destined to pop.

Where once stood a diverse sprawling forest filled with mysteries now stands a managed woodland. Same raw materials, an entirely different experience.

We are not the same world. We are not the same people. Our relationship to this thing has changed.

* Reddit ends free API access.
* Twitter turns off anonymous reading.
* Youtube is talking about banning ad-blocking users.

The tech industry was living on cheep money and low interest rates, and now they're all afraid to let their precious content get used for AI training.

The walls are going up, the lawful corporate web is collapsing in on itself.

So Twitter turned off anonymous reading today.

I'm not logged in on this iPad so any twitter dot com link I inadvertently click on shoves an obnoxious login popup in my face.

... So I'm about to block/mute toots containing twitter links.

Bye, Elon, don't let the doorknob hit you on the ass on your way out.

@sarajw @andy Still MDN, just don't use the AI Help feature (which is labelled 'beta').

To be clear: I think this is huge & fundamental error by MDN, it should be removed as fast as possible and must never return … but … it has no direct impact on the information that is already there. You just have to know to not use it. Unfortunately most visitors won't know.

@andy “Expected behavior: I would like MDN to contain correct information” 😬

It's only been 3 days since I did #TheWeekInTory, but that hasn't stopped them. It hasn't even slowed them down. It's an absolute blizzard of chaos.

(There's a mistake in this - I refer to Johnson's time as Home Secretary, I meant Foreign Secretary)

The UK government's announcement that websites will need to verify or estimate the age of users to stop kids from seeing pron ignores risks to privacy.

Collecting large pools of biometric data without proper governance structures in place will swap one harm for another.
