I live on the shores of #LakeSuperior on the #Keweenaw Peninsula in the #UpperPeninsula of #Michigan. This region is within Ojibwe Gichigami (“Ojibwa’s Great Sea”) homelands and ceded-territory, established by the TREATY OF 1842
I'm a professor of #environmental #chemistry with an interest in everything related to #climate, including molecular to global aspects of the carbon cycle, energy and social transitions, new and old technologies for sustainability, forests and biodiversity, local to international climate policy, and the systems thinking approaches we need to make progress.
Too much of a news and politics junkie than is healthy.
I share my homestead with a partner, a dog, several felines, two donkeys, plants, and occasional uninvited critters.

Very much a fan of this image from https://www.visualcapitalist.com/countries-by-share-of-earths-surface/ that shows why that recent UN treaty on protecting the ocean beyond national jurisdiction matters - this is a HUGE proportion of Earth's surface. #ocean #BBJN https://press.un.org/en/2023/sgsm21708.doc.htm

Why don’t all our public spaces have greenery like this?

New research from Skovgaard et al shows how public finance for #petrochemicals funds industrial infrastructures that last decades, and thus contributes to the carbon lock-in & limits the low-carbon investments

Also Mercury. How are they extracting and purifying the gold? Often it’s by making an amalgam with Hg.
Slower, but equally bad for kids education.

See thread above.
I was trying to update interested people about the Michigan Tech speaker next week.

Thanks
It seems responding to a post doesn’t loop in other previous responders, so they won’t see it. And won’t see there is a new response?
@nutjob4life
Every now and then I check out some papers in a few of these fake journals.
I’m pretty sure chat GPT would do better.
Soon finding a research paper that’s worth reading will become as hard as doing the research.
Yes.
An all electric economy would have far less grey on the energy flow charts.

Oh, man. This comic — from 1993 — could NOT be more relevant today. As usual, Bill Watterson hits it out of the park.

Important update:
Keweenaw Pride and a coalition of other student groups are organizing a counter event with the goal of sucking all the attention away from the offensive speaker.
He wants attention and controversy, ignoring him is the best revenge.

Only about 150 inches to date in Houghton. Keweenaw County is posting 225.75 inches. We're on the lakeshore, some generally a bit less than inland.

Sadly the storm rather petered out here in the #keweenaw Only about 6 inches in the past few days.

And why did it take me so long to discover so stock. Just boil up those scraps and keep for the next soup day.
