Another project develops a #FieldTheory of the #orderphobic effect, a nonspecific interaction between #transmembrane bodies anchored in a #lipid #bilayer.

As a #ScreenReader user, I find #hashtags at the end of a post to be suboptimal. As I'm unable to visually scan, I don't know that you haven't written anything after the hashtags, and hence have to choose between: listening to them anyway, or being okay with potentially missing content. When written inline within the flow of your text, this problem doesn't occur. #accessibility #a11y

Some more tips for newcomers (I've only been here 19 days). Safety stuff, this time:
You can change DM settings. But DMs aren't really DMs. They appear in your timeline, but only people you've @ can see the post.
Which means if you're having a group chat and someone adds the @ of someone you're talking about, they can see the whole conversation.
You can set DMs to people you follow only, etc.
Racists exist here, of course. Many are on the paternalistic end of the racism scale. Or are covert/sneaky. But IYKYK.
Depending on your server, reporting works. People get suspended fairly quickly.
Suspended accounts will set up somewhere else, so be ready to block again.
Many of you are already experts at Block and Mute. On the web browser, there's options for muting (time, type). You can also mute or block whole servers.
Stay safe. And ignore the nice white people who insist this is a nice place, and racism doesn't exist.
Mastodon is a very white space, but I've noticed that changing in a short time. Let's keep challenging the status quo.

* Temporary muting (e.g. for a day)
* Self-verified URLs in the profile
* Hiding spoilers etc. via content warnings
* URLs must start with protocols (fewer false positives, e.g. in code).
* Everyone can edit posts (in v4+).
* No ads (which doesn’t come for free = donate if you can afford it)
More obscure: I like that you can search for post URLs to “transfer” them between accounts.

You were here.
It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users an hour. Almost a quarter million migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.
It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.

Being on Mastodon for the past few days and it reminded me of the friendliness of the earlier days of the Internet, before *coughs* forced engagement, and *coughs* metrics. It's nice to feel heard and seen, and to reciprocate naturally to that. I don't mind the slowness.

If you're trying to communicate as widely as possible, with the hope of getting boosted, choose PUBLIC.
All the other settings offer narrower options to your liking.

The Surgeons' Hall Riot happened #OTD in 1870. The Edinburgh Seven arrived at Surgeons' Hall to sit their anatomy exam and were met by a crowd of male students and several hundred onlookers who opposed of women studying medicine. Not to be deterred the women went on to sit their exam.
After not being allowed to graduate at the time the group were posthumously awarded their medical degrees from Edinburgh University in 2019.
