@herid and to discuss actual problems that are new we need to look at hsitoric problems of the same nature so we can have a productive conversation. You want to censor information based on some dictator taking away the autonomy if people because they dont like some information. So yes its important to look at historic examples of that and the consequences to decide if we shoukd repeat the same pattern yet again.
@herid of course this situation actualy arises. Are you claiming no books exist which have medical quackery in them?
@herid shoukd we burn books that have meducal misinfirmation in them? Why or why not?
Yup, the death threat he got included a video of a very gruesom and real woman being murdered. It was quite graphic.
@herid as i said at the begining, the science says that abolishing and censoring thibgs increases their adoption. So on that alone trying to censor it woukd in fact cause their spread to increase. We have already seen this with places like twitter blockibg covid misinformation and yet the soread of such opinions only accelerated, just ad the science would have predicted.
It seems quite abusive to take it upon myself to cripple people from beibg to see somethibg because i deem it incorrect. We are a science instance, it isnt welcome here.
Yes its the sane idea as burning books, you are tryibg to act as information police, we know historically that always winds up on the wrong side of history with far more harm than the information ever posed.
@mur2501 I can....
@herid yes?

I paid for someone's groceries once(they were ahead of me). As the mom was thanking me after i paid. I bought her son a pack of gum as well.
Funny thing, she was initially really pissed at me for invading her space or something as I walked up to the card reader before she could get back to it. Like I was stealing from her or whatever. It wasn't until I pulled my card out and register did it's beeps that I could hear her head clicking into realization of the situation.
I don't do such things that often because of how potentially irate people can be when you try to be nice to them as aforementioned.
I had a coworker tell me once about how he generously paid for a lady's coffee in front of him and she got offended because she thought he was insulting her financial status. "Dude, she was a little old lady- I had no way to tell how much money she had! They all dress the same!" Lol
@admitsWrongIfProven im usually lretty generous with my gift giving. When i was in the usa id give christmas gifts to random people on the street sometimes.
@herid what if the book is filled with dangerous medical quackery? How is that different?
@herid similarly i wouldnt host a book in a medical library that was antivax. It would simply be a waste of space on our shelves. But if someone who has a card at my library wants to request the book i wouldnt prevent them from doing so
@unamanic yea i just heard that... she actually wasnt honest about this. Qoto was an issue on hackyderms part and thry knew about it they had a whole thread on it. She blocked qoto knew this, and that is the only reason their qoto followers didnt come along.
@herid To me we are getting into banning book and burning book territory.. i dont think even dangerous books should be burned.
@unamanic can you point me to the exact point in the podcast?
@unamanic you mean the two followers that moved who had accoubts here a week... what about it?
@herid no on qoto itself it woukd be suspended
@herid I suppose your right there will always be idiots out there who refuse to fact check things before they adop it as truths, even on a STEM server.
I generally find (and many studies show) the act of prohibition on almost everything results in increased usage/adoption, counter intuitive as that may sound. I also wouldnt feel right about forcing people not to see a thing simply for being wrong.. If someone wants to read something someone posted that is stupid, thy have the right to read it and have the autonomy to be treated as a responsible adult in doing so.
@herid I dont see much value in that account either.. what harm do you think a server full of Qualified STEM professionals would have by being able to see anti-scientific content exists and being capable of reading it? Other than wasting their time, rolling their eyes and in most cases just walking past it I dont see the harm it would cause a bunch of experts in the STEM field honestly. If anything scientists and doctors being able to see the kind of garbage that is out there so they can correct the misinformation seems like an important avenue that reduces harm more so than just blinding them from seeing it at all.
@herid You dont have to federate with them, do you know how to block whole servers?
As for why others on our server arent being forced to block them.. well there arent too many useful reasons, but one important one is so if someone wants to reply to their posts and correct the nonsense so others veiwers can hear the counter-evidence that seems like one useful reason.
