@LouisIngenthron

First, why not, thats how every product sold on this planet (more or less) has been sold since forever.

Second you are ignoring the fact that your approach literally doesnt work, whereas the approach of charging per-seat does.

Thirdly, It doesnt (depend on your volume of sales). It depends on **Unity's** volume of sales, which you happen to be reselling to your own clients.

Not sure why you think that just because you paid to use a library you now have the right to let other people also use that library for free. You dont get royalty rights of redistribution, if you did it wouldnt make sense, and generally thats not how products even work.

Like literally think of any other software component that is sold at a fee.. they almost all work this way. If i buy a license to use oracle it doesnt mean that every business who uses my product now gets free oracle servers just because I, as the developer, paid to be allowed to use oracle servers during my development.

@LouisIngenthron

> It's not free. They already charge a subscription.

Never said it was free. In fact my whole point is that its not.

> But more importantly, there are already established ways to do this better, like a straight revenue cut percentage. That doesn't unfairly punish developers for offering games to charity or selling their game at a lower price.

Not sure why the price of my product should depend on the price of yours. If I sell premium high quality silk cloth, should I let you have it for free simply because you create shitty clothes that no one wants to buy so you give them away?

Not only can I not see the logic in pricing my product based on yours, but how would it even work? All I see as the library owner (assuming i bake it into the library) is who installs it. I have no way to verify or no what, if any, the price was you sold it for. Am I just supposed to trust you will tell me?

I dunno I mean i see where your coming from in trying to encourage developers to get on board. But I just cant see how your approach can actually be implemented in any reasonable way.

@LouisIngenthron

Even if they are given away for free, Unity isnt open-source. It costs if you want to use it. You cant give away something for free that you built if you are using a component that costs money. Its not like just cause you decided to give it away for free that anything i based my work on needs to waive their fees or something.

The truth is, there is good reason not to use Unity. Because it is a library that isnt open-source. That alone is a good reason and always has been. But for me it doesnt make much sense to complain that a for-profit product actually requires users of that product to pay.

@LouisIngenthron Thinking about this it kinda makes sense. It isnt Unity's responsibility to handle anti-piracy, thats the developers job. It is the developers responsibility to write their code in a way that has effective anti-piracy measures in it.

@floppy

Yea sorry i dont have any better ideas on tools. good luck rolling your own!

I just moved to kroki a few weeks ago and setup a server on QOTO. After coming from plantUML and Mermaid this is pretty much the exact same idea but combines the two of them AND adds like 20 more diagram types, all text based. I am loving it.

Just a note, while you can use the link i gave you to design stuff on a webui, they dont have a public backend server you can use, so if you use other tools that support it on the backend (like WikiJS) then youd need to set up your own server. That said the QOTO kroki server is free for anyone to use:

kroki.qoto.org

@floppy

So now that I know your needs a bit better here is my 2 cents

1) If you want to roll everything yourself, go for it. You dont need a good reason. But building off of existing tech is going to save you a lot of time and probably give you a more capable result.

2) I'd suggest text based formats that render as an image rather than a GUI. This way the "source" is the output already and if you want the output to be closer to JSON then all you do is write a simple script to convert from one to the other

2a) By doing the above you can leverage GIT along side your diagram/graph versions and actually look at (and understand) diffs.

3) If you really need a GUI, those do exist, and plenty of them are web based (like diagrams.io), though i cant think of one that is web based, open source, and fills all your needs while being a purely point and click interface (no text editing.

Anyway, as to the above. I highly recommend something like Mermaid, plantUML or kroki.

HEre is the web UI for kroki to generate diagrams of any kind:

kroki.io/

Choose any one of the many diagram types that support graphs (there are a few) and you should have most of what you need.

Of course if you need #3 then closest I know of is diagrams.io and similar tools. But wont quite get you there either.

@floppy Awesome. So as for editing graphs (something im intimately familiar with as everything i deal with is based on graph theory)... So is this just for visual purposes, that you want to visualize a graph data structure. Or are you talking about some sort of GUI editor that spits it out as source code so you can use graph structures in code?

If your just trying to visually edit graphs thats easy there are tons of options. I can think of a few that meet your criteria as well.. but what do you mean "switch between nodes".. what are you "switching"?

@floppy When you say "graph editor" what do you mean.. graph as in a plot, or a graph as in vertex and edges as a data structure?

@lonelyowl

Any diet, vegan or otherwise, that is too restrictive, especially over long periods, will give you troubles in some sense. Buckwheat and macaroons will get you feeling sick a lot quicker than a nice variety of leafy greens. Though a nice diet of leafy greens AND meat is going to be healthier still.

@matthewjones

I've accidentally gone vegan a few times because I didn't have enough money for normal food, but when I had the money I went out and bought meat.

When I don't eat meat I feel kind of sick, I not sure why.

@lonelyowl

It takes a lot longer to become protein deficient than it does to become vitamin deficient on a vegan diet. Most likely you were lacking the B12 your body needs.

That said it may also be unrelated to veganism in your case and more so related to the fact that you were on a cheap diet with little variety (probably more white carbs than leafy green veggies).

@matthewjones

@matthewjones

I tried to become vegan twice... Both times it resulted in protein deficiency as well as some bitamin deficiencies. My ex-fiancee of the time was a vegan her whole life and likewise had similar deficiencies.

For her it was quite easy to address, she just had to make a conscious effort to take vitamins and eat more protein. For me however I had issues regardless and had to stop the vegan experiment both times.

@georgetakei Umm, im not sure impeachment is legitimate I agree. But wrong doing... the man has a mountain of that to his name. Lets not forget, he did start his career and spend the bulk of it actively campaigning to keep segregation alive... not even Trump has done anything as racist as that.

@TruthSandwich

For someone who claims to not be racist you sure use the "but he has black friends" a lot to excuse Biden's clear and historic racism.

@TruthSandwich Yup, I certainly have no issue calling a racist a racist regardless of whose wingman he is.

@TruthSandwich

98% of americans voted for a racist regardless of their race or sex... your right, an ugly truth about american racism.
