@BenAveling

Right, cause all those good people whose lives were saved because they had a gun and were able to protect themselves... thats not a "legitimate use" and wouldnt have had a negative impact if it was taken away.... Quite obviously your statement is disproven by example, even one example disproves it.

@ErikUden @Elleaster

@icedquinn funny how everyone always thinks the bad people are everyone but them or their groups... the rich say its all the fault of the lazy poor people, the poor people say its all the fault of the rich. The democrats blame everything on the republicans, and vise versa... communists blame the fail on communism on the fact that everyone else isnt communist... its a joke.

Im one of few people who think everyone shares in the blame, the poor the rich, the whole damn human race... apparently that makes me a nazi or something.

@Revertron Well I am a big supporter of local government having rule over national.. there are issues with that though, one big one being that not everyone has the finances to just upend and move wherever they want

@TruthSandwich

> Oh, good, I disagree.

Oh thank god, thank you! I was worried there for a second.

> I don't think that we're polarized. That would falsely imply that, just as the party of the right has gone far right, the party of the left has gone far left.

I dont think we have to reduce our scope to parties to measure polarization.. we have to look at the opinions of the people. The left have went far left just like the right... the difference is when the left when far left they saw the DNC and the GOP as evil and ultimately went to more far-left leaning parties, or refused to vote all together, even the DNC itself has become far more polarized in their attitudes (and to a lesser extent their policies).

I have seen a constant pattern from those on the left to be abusive and even violent towards people who question their views, this includes many who consider themself in the DNC.

I recently switched from to ... mostly like it but there is one thing that is likely going to cause me to go back to a chrome based browser.... it doesnt handle my 100 tabs very well.

On chrome no matter how many tabs i opened they would size shrink so they all fit... librewolf (and i presume all FF based browser) give me about 20 tabs i can see and then i have to scroll throught hem... As someone who has hundreds of tabs open that just is unmanageable...

@icedquinn

You always were, all elements of XML are invalid because XML is shit and invalid :)

@mzan

@TruthSandwich I thought we came to an arrangement that you would stop agreeing with me, and in return I promised I wouldnt agree with you... damn you!

@sim

Uea I think that makes sense as an option too... if i want to hide a post reply just for myself anot others, sure why not...

Though im not sure why someone would want to when they could silence the person.. but i guess a thread-scoped silence might be useful... why not

@LouisIngenthron

@mzan

We dont do hemlock here.. We have "The holy cannabis edible"... you take one bite of it and then we laugh at you as the madness ensues :)

@icedquinn

Well I almost died in a trash avalanch at my desk again... guess its time to clean...

@sim

Well where we are headed and where we are discussing we should head are two different things...

We are talking about enabling the user to choose if they want to agree with the OP or not and hide the replies the OP chooses to hide.. its one filter a viewer can adopt or not, the power is in their hand.

That said the suggestion in the toot I quoted I suspect would not give the viewer the choice at all, but forced upon them... which is where I suspect we are more likely to head.

@LouisIngenthron

@mzan

> in other words, in Greece, democracy was like a Tirrany, but instead of giving all the power to a single man, or to a restrict number of people (oligarchia), they gave all the power to the vote of the majority.

Yup we call that a tryanny of the majority.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyranny_

@icedquinn

I guess that works both ways... people wont follow the rules either unless they are threatened to be killed if they dont.

@mzan

@icedquinn

When the people who run a system are corrupt then no rules, no matter how perfect they may be will ever serve justice.

Rules only work when the system enforces them fairly for everyone.

@mzan

@mzan @freemo rule of law has not been very effective though. The USA daily does things the charter says is never to be done, and activist judges work to make up laws at their benches. On rare occasion somebody actually steps in and fixes isolated cases of it, but, generally I'd say rule of law is a resounding failure as a concept

@sim

The problem isnt solving... but what we should do is enable the power to the viewer to do what they want... have many tools that provide filters in many forms and let the viewer decide what filters get them the best comrpromise they can. This ultimately depends on what tolerance the user has for noise and how ok the user is with some signal getting lost accidentally.

Until the problem is solved... enable the user to control their view of the world how they see fit.

@LouisIngenthron

@freemo fun fact: in ancient Greece, democracy was all about the "power" (i.e. 'crazia') to the citzens (i.e. 'demos'), through a majority vote during an assembly, after a free discussion. There were no clear concepts of individual rights and respect of the minority, like in modern democracies. There were no supreme constitutional rights: if the majority vote decides something, this will be effective.

The assembly was used for direct government, and also for judging people in trials. For example Socrate was condemned from a jury of 500 or more citizens. They did not applied codified laws, but they decided that what he was doing was a danger for the values of the community, because the majority of the assembly decided so.
