@TruthSandwich

The dictionary definition is:

obstinate **or** unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction, in particular prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.

Hating bigots with a very firm stance would be "obstinate attachment to an opinion, in particular prejudice against a person on the basis of membership of a particular group".. that group being bigots...

So yes, strictly speaking bigotry towards bigots is bigotry, its just proof that not all bigotry is bad.

Low-alcohol beer is quite common, and even outside of socialism. It is used as a flavored drink not to get drunk with the added benefit that it has just enough alcohol to act as a slight preservative and disinfectant.

@garyackerman

@raymccarthy

Point is what happened the monkeys is perfectly normal and expected... so nothing "not straight" about that (other than the sadness of animal testing)...

That said I dont like them as a companya nd wouldnt buy an implant off of them if I needed one, sure... but you'd need a pretty solid objective reason to actually block them.

@ajsadauskas @technology

@iron_bug

It is a pollutant because too much of it too quickly will (and has) wiped out most life on earth... yea its a pollutant.. being normal at some level and extremely harmful at another is not an argument that it isnt a pollutant.

@bonifartius

@volkris

> I'd say this is a case where different people may use the terms slightly differently, and this example falls within the bounds of normal diversity of usages.

Id argue that the other uses of the word are incorrect

> Since growing and burning wood keep the carbon cycle on the surface some would consider it to be green.

Thats like saying gasoline is green because i captured an equal amount of co2 by growing trees for every gallon of gas I sold... no the gas still harms the environment, the fact that you put effort into fixing the environment that you then undid in equal perportion doesnt make the act of burning it green.

@bonifartius

> i thought we were arguing wood! :)

We are, but often talking about other examples help us to understand the specific case of wood.

> i'd argue that wood is just stored energy from the sun. so are fossil fuels but the problem (if it is a problem) are the time scales and using energy of millions of years in a few decades. that wouldn't happen with wood. you will never create more co2 than stored. if you strive for growing more than used, you will store carbon.

The stored energy from the sun is irrelevant.. as I said chemically releasing energy from the sun is **not** what makes wood problematic. The fact that it releases tons of pollutants like CO2 to do it is.

CO2 may just be captured from the air, sure... but before trees the air couldnt sustain life and would be toxic to humans... trees came along and captured all that CO2 so it was no longer toxic... once the air wasnt toxic non-plant life could evolve...

Now your suggesting "hey its perfectly fine all that toxic stuff existed before animal life so who cares if it gets back out"... except it getting it back out reverts us to a pre-life condition and kills all life ont he planet.... so yea.

@georgetakei If only we gave people with mental disorders the compassion they deserve when they are alive rather than after their dead...

@bonifartius Energy which is burned to release CO2 and other pollutants and green house gases isnt considered green.

Of course some small CO2 is usually still considered green over a life time (like solar panel production) but are 0-emmision for producing power... But this is insignificant. For example an acre of solar panels will save about 140 **tons** of co2 a year compared to the same amount of energy from coal.

@bonifartius That doesnt make the act of burning them any less green though. just means in addition to the harm you did some seperate thing that did some good.

Its like saying gasoline is green cause I planted a tree when i was a kid.

Yes that is probably what they are doing... im poiinting out that is incorrect... biomass is not an "other" it is a renewable, non-green resource so should either be under renewable or renewable should be renamed to green.

@christineburns

@noelle While you are right it does remove atmospheric moisture (and moisture it directly touched but thats not relevant) that isnt to say it wont help dry it.

The silica gel will bring the humidity in the air to 0%, this super dry air will cause accelerated evaporation of any water in the device. As it evaporates it will be captured by the silica keeping the humid near 0%... It will **significantly** speed up the rate of drying.

I use it to fast dry plant material before chemical extraction. The same plant material that would take 2 weeks to dry in the open air would take about 24 hours to dry when sealed and packed with silica.

@noelle I think the logic is rice is supposed to be a dessicant... but its a pretty poor one... if your gonna put your phone in something to dry buy some silica "gel" (its not a gel)

Just a remind... renewable energy and green energy are two very different things. Charcoal and wood are renewable energy sources but are not green energy sources.

@christineburns Just a reminder charcoal and wood are considered "renewable resources"... renewable is not the same as green.

Thankfully here the renewable resources are also green resources.. my point is only that its a bad choice of breakdown IMO
