#ShareTheMusic for 9/18/2019: The Mountain Goats Edition

So, The Mountain Goats.

Where to start with this amazing band. I feel like I can find a Mountain Goats song for almost anything. Any thought or feeling, almost any situation past or present in my life.

John Darnielle is the primary member of The Mountain Goats. He is, for all intents and purposes, the band on his own.

He's an amazing song writer who somehow translates a lot of human emotion into music.

His personal experiences are poured out in the many albums he's released. His relationship with his family (in particular his Step Father), his relationship with living a hard life, his relationship with religion, and i particular his interest in the human condition where loss and loneliness is concerned are particularly obvious.

Depression, anxiety, happiness, and stark beauty are hallmarks, in my opinion, of his style. He seems to sing about the human condition, and even now I'm finding new meaning to songs I've listen to based on what I'm learning about or what I've been connecting to in the recent days.

But now, the music. Offered

Isaiah 45:23 from The Life of the World to Come.

A song written from the standpoint of someone who is dying, perhaps in hospice care:

(For those curious, here is the text of Isaiah 45:23 KJV- I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.)

This Year from The Sunset Tree

This album is primarily about John's complicated relationship with his stepfather. This song is specifically about a 17 year old John trying to make it to 18 years old so he can finally GTFO.

Harlem Roulette from Transcendental Youth

A song about people left behind and forgotten.

Lovecraft in Brooklyn from Heretic Pride.

This isn't a song about Lovecraft, but rather about a guy who's experiencing extreme some super serious social anxiety and xenophobia. This is a recurring theme in John's music- outcasts, hermits, people who live apart from the regular.

The Mess Inside from All Hail West Texas

Sometimes love doesn't last and it's lost despite one's best intentions and efforts. It leaves you longing for brighter days, but in the end running away from your problems will never fix them.

Now, for one last song.

No Children from Tallahassee

This one was featured in the Adult Swim show Moral Oral.

It's another song of loss and hopelessness featuring a divorce and the comfort of the pain you're used to.

The Mountain Goats have an impressive catalog of songs and I fully recommend checking them out. I love them.

That is today's ! Have a BEAUTIFUL day!

Ya know I havent watched the movie Brazil in a long time, long enough to forget the details but not so long as to forget how awesome it was.

time for a rewatch!

@imurcultleader Don't bother with normal. It's not a game you can win, it's not a game that you'd be happy winning or playing.

I just realized that on September 27 of this year (9 days away) my Freenode IRC username turns 15 years old. Pretty sure its the oldest username i own on the internet.

I wish I was a woman so I could change my name to "Ira Annie" and start a club called the "Iron Knee".

Serious question:

I sometimes see Christians pray to "baby Jesus". Is there any spiritual distinction between "baby Jesus" and adult Jesus? Is one more appropriate for certain christian prayers than the other?

I want to propose a programming challenge. This could be fun for beginners and experienced programmers as well. It is language agnostic. It might even be more about community than the programming part itself. The challenge itself should not take more than an hour. But it shouldn't be so simple that you don't have to put in a little effort. I will propose the first one, and those who participate are welcome to propose the next and as we can agree on it we can go off and knock it out.

Once you see other people's results you can modify your own, or even propose something to make someone else's better or faster or fix a bug that you find.

These can become toy programs for you to have around for testing concepts, and helping to try out other languages.

If you are interested or know someone else who might want to play too share this with them.

I guess we can use this thread to get started, and I guess i am supposed to use a hashtag for something like this so how about

I will try to work in Python at least in the beginning but you are welcome to work in whatever you are comfortable with.

First challenge:

"Ninety-nine bottles of beer on the wall"

Generate the whole song from "Ninety-nine" to "No". The output should look like :

Ninety-nine bottles of beer on the wall.
Ninety-nine bottles of beer. Take one down,
pass it around... Ninety-eight bottles of beer.

(You know what the middle looks like)

Two bottles of beer on the wall.
Two bottles of beer. Take one down,
pass it around... one bottle of beer.

One bottle of beer on the wall.
One bottle of beer. Take one down,
pass it around... No bottles of beer.

I won't put too many specifics on how you get there, but the output should be words, not numerals :) Try to write clean, maintainable and visually understandable code.

Let see if I am alone or anyone wants to play along. :)

Here is my first attempt total time 48 minutes.

I posted the 100 pots problem I had shared here earlier to our discourse. Even though I already gave the answer I thought I'd share it here in case anyone has anything they would like to share or discuss about the topic:

As we covered, if you ask someone not to tag you or spam your account with unwanted messages, and you ask someone multiples times, they explicitly refuse and then continue to do so some 20 times even after a block. That **is** harassment by any definition of the term.

Also doesnt matter if you see it as harassment or not unless you can somehow actually make a compelling argument that convinces the admins/moderators but sadly no one has come close to doing that.

Here is a screen shot of my i3 setup upon request. Also including my qtile screen shot for comparison. Both really cool tiling window managers.

@johnlitt

Sorry I've been away, was walking around Amsterdam all weekend and configuring a fresh Archlinux install on my Surface Book 2.

Had the basic install working a few days ago but was mostly tweaking and configuring the window managers to be pretty and behave how i like. I got both i3 and qtile working with mostly all the same key bindings. Its pretty cool and looks super sexy.
