Today I spent about 8 hours cleaning. There are atleast 20 bags of 33 gallon trashbags out for trash and a mountain of boxes. Also managed to get my very expensive Kenwood TS-990 shipped out for repair. I also cleaned up the Chemistry lab and Electrical Engineering Lab.. Very excited to see that productivity kick in again!
@sean While I dont personally promote blocking at the instance level I do respect instances that do.
I think if you are blocking instances GAB obviously makes a lot of sense with even a 15 second look at their timeline.
The reason I dont personally block any instances is largely because of what happened when we were tried to decide this during the birth of Isolate GAB movement, we almost did block GAB and others.
Our LGBT community at the time came together an en masse begged me not to, which I found odd at first but their reasoning made a lot of sense. They want a way to be able to monitor high-risk GAB accounts for threats against their community. Mostly doxxing of members in their community which the disseminate among each other. Obviously they didnt feel safe simply opening a GAB account because that would expose their personal details to GAB and they didnt want that.
Later we even implemented the subscription feature for a similar reason. This way our users can subscribe to a GAB user without actually following them as a further mechanism of safety.
It really saddens me though that choice I made specifically in the interest of protecting our LGBT community from harm has brought us some hate from the community and even blocks ourselves.
To me that is a price I am happy to pay to protect those individuals though.
Overall it has made me think about fediblocks in a very different way too.

I just found a spider in my house and we had a nice long conversation. Went something like this: "
Me: Aww hey little guy, how ya doin?
spider:: ::wiggle wiggle::
me: Yea me too, one of those days. You a little lost, not too many bugs around here for ya.
spider: ::jostles his fangs::
me: yea I thought so, let me try to give you a hand. ::lifts up the container he is on to bring it outside::
spider ::jumps on me then immediately onto the carpet::
me: Woa, its ok, im sorry. I'm sure you know what your doin! Feel free to hang out in a corner somewhere, my home is your home! Let me know if you need anything ::walks away::
spider ::wiggles butt in approval and walks away::
fediblock, it's a long one
@kyzh@rage.love I just want everyone to know who might read this that I have never expiernced an iota of racism from leonie or koyu space.
They are a wonderful and tolerant instance that appears to have the utmost respect for minorities and LGBT groups.
Lets focus this energy on people who really deserve it and unify, not divide!
Please remind the people who say, "there's only a few bad apples," or "there's always going to be a few bad apples," it doesn't work that way.
These folks should learn the full proverbs:
"As one bad apple spoils the others, so you must show no quarter to sin or sinners."
"A bad apple spoils the bin,"
Benjamin Franklin had it as "the rotten apple spoils his companion," which goes back to Shakespeare's time.
@freemo QOTO has been wonderful, and I found a home here after leaving a previous instance due to free speech restrictions, so I thank you and the QOTO team for giving people a voice :)
A post I made recently on our forum about how essential Free Speech is, especially to a STEM instance (adapted from the original).
Freedom of speech is a basic human right, and double important in the field of science. It isnt “religious like” so much as it is essential to any space where the primary goal is truth.
It has served more to bolster our reputation than it ever has to hurt it. 58% of our users explicitly joined due to freedom of speech principles and the rest were not put off by it evidenced by their presence.
I find it ironic that the only instances that have ever used the principle to “hurt our reputation” are instances themselves with a horrible reputation, often instances that struggle to keep users and where large numbers of their user base have fled to other free speech oriented instances (QOTO being a huge focus among them).
I have seen people repeatedly suggest we block users simply because their opinion disagreed with their own (usually politically) and thus you’d think it would “hurt our reputation”. Perhaps the focus shouldnt be what the reputation of a server who has created a walled echo chamber for themselves and demands it of others. Perhaps the focus should be the quality of our server, to foster a free exchange of ideas where a person doesnt need to be in fear that should their opinion be too unpopular they will be cast away.
We have all seen the damage in both the USA and Europe excessive censorship of speech has caused in the past. During the cold war tens of thousands were arrested in the USA for voicing communist sentiments. In europe During WWII only propaganda pro-nationalist messages were even permitted on the airwaves at all. The people have suffered greatly from this.
It is important to note what free speech means. It doesnt not (and never has) meant “you can say anything you want without repercussions”. What it does mean is that “you are free to hold any opinion you want, but your expression of that opinion may be held to scrutiny”
The irony in all of this is if anyone actively pushed free speech on any of the servers people worry about our “reputation” with they would have been suspended long ago. We wouldnt even be able to have this sort of dialogue on those servers at all.
I dont wish to control others and force them to think like me, I do not want an echo chamber, I do not want a curated list of opinions that follow my vision. I want a meeting of minds, I want brilliant people living without fear to voice their opinions, engage in debate, and reach for truth.
I have been on many of the servers some people seem to worry about our reputation with. They are the most toxic and vile environments I have ever seen online. To worry about our reputation with them is sad to say the least, let alone to want to replicate it. On the other hand I am immensely proud of the effect free speech has had on the quality of discussion on QOTO and the level of tolerance it has proven to foster between its members and the ability to have a fact-based, respectful discourse on otherwise difficult and emotional issues.
If after being at QOTO and seeing the difference between the rampant toxic intolerance of the other instances and our wonderful sense of tolerance and you still dont feel free speech has value, then sadly I have to wonder if you really can recognize what a healthy and vibrant community looks like. Luckily the vast majority of our users see the value, appreciate it, and stay because of it.
This is the story I hear time and time again. We did a survey and 58% of the people who came to QOTO came here because we have a policy of tolerance when it comes to speech, not oppression (aka free speech).
We see over and over again with the instances that do not espouse tolerance of opinions that ultimately the users mass migrate away, (thankfully mostly to places like QOTO) and what is left is an echo chamber of only the most toxic elements. Then they stay in their bubble and only really start trouble when they tell another instance that their intolerance should carry over there as well.
People also need to understand free speech does not mean "you can say anything at all and always be immune".. what it means is tolerance of opinions, an ability to share ideas in open forum without fear that one small mistep means you are banished forever. We make it clear that explicit racism and sexism isnt tolerated, and we have stood by that.
And our policies have served us. Not only are we in the top 20 most federated servers we also serve as an example to many other servers with instances replicating our ToS policy regularly and by having a good relationship with the tolerant minority represented instances throughout the fediverse.
The only consequence of our actions is a small handful of oppressive instances (both towards minorities and the general public) dont want to hear what we have to say. Personally I say we are far better off not having their noise in our timeline anyway.
I can say this, I am immensely proud of the open dialog we have at QOTO. We have by far the most respectful community ont he fediverse when it comes to how we treat others, and a mutual respect in our discussions and dialog I have seen no where else on the internet. As the founder of this community I hope to do what I can to make sure it stays that way.
@design_RG This is actually why I switched to qoto.org. They seem to want to defederate from anyone who doesn't believe in defederating from gab et al.
It's a bit sad and honestly one of the most offputting parts of the fediverse for me.
There is also a subtheme on nonverbal thinking and someone who claimed to have started thinking verbally halfway through college. A commenter stated that this story is obviously fake, as no one would be able to get that far in life without thinking verbally.
My wife (PhD in physics, still thinks nonverbally) was very amused by that comment.
